Default Top wishbone XJ

Hi new to site and looking for bit technical knowledge from all you guys who have prob had my issues before, got a 2007 XJ and getting a squeaking/ creaking nose from front N/S suspension. Think it might be my upper wishbone ? As replaced lower control arm. It’s there as you drive along, but more apparent when going over speed bumps. Is this this the noise normally relating to this issue ? Secondly I guess you have to remove air shock to get the top bolts out ? Anyone ever did this before ? Thanks in advance.

What miles on the car ? May I suggest you inspect the boot on the top wishbone balljoint. If it's split, there could be corrosion in the ball joint and if you let things slide, the ball-joint shaft could eventually fracture letting your front wheel go where it likes and putting you in the ditch at the same time.

Default Wishbone

The car has done 142,000 now. After a lot of messing about having to take the air strut out and the wipers and cabin air filter box. I managed to change the wish bone put it all back together for the car to be sitting low, but turns out the height sensor had come out, re attached and up she went. Bad news is after all that the car still has the creak/squeak. So scratching my head ! Might now just be the lower suspension arm bush? Which means it all has to come apart again !

Chances are your lower shock bushings are worn out, mine were, & are with a lot fewer miles than 142,000. As of yet i have not been able to figure out how to press them out, & into the arms myself. Getting them changed out while on the car, is what my goal is, but as of yet unable to change them out myself at all. The price of new bushings all around, then the price to install them, then an alignment, makes replacing the arms with aftermarkets, a possible alternative. Learned how to set the toe in, well enough on the 07, to track straight, with the steering wheel setting level where it belongs. The aftermarkets seem not set up to make adjustments for the caster, & camber. So just set the adjusting nuts where they were, & things seem to steer fine so far. The cogs cut into the big end bushings are just not there on the after markets, so adjusting them seems to do nothing. Things must not be too far off, as the steering, as well as the suspension just feel a lot better, tighter. Need to replace the lower front shock bushings on the 04, just as soon as i figure out, just how to do it, while still on the car. As i paid for an alignment, when i replaced the tires, soon after purchasing the car, going through the worn steering, and suspension parts, that would affect the lifespan of the new tires.

Been to local garage and after poking and prodding the front suspension, he is of the opinion it’s the actual air shock itself ! Another expensive part. But would the lower shock bush cause the squeak/creak symptoms I am having ?

I would beware any garage expressing an opinion on the suspension units, other than a good Jag independant or an independant that specialises in other makes with air suspension.

I guess your a jaguar mechanic or touting for one ? ..... it’s a forum and it’s about asking questions on issues that maybe drivers have experienced before. Rather than a robbing jag specialist charging you stupid money to tell you it’s a £10 bush ! Any help would be appreciated.

NO, I AM NOT A JAG INDEPENDANT TOUTING FOR JAG INDIES.

I'm trying to stop you letting your 'local (presumably generalist) garage' fitting you a new suspension unit because it's the only thing they can think of.

A good Jag indie is going to have a much better understanding of the X350 suspension than a 'local garage' and will be far better at diagnosing squeaks and rattles and if it's only a bush that's the problem that's what they'll fit.

EDIT: Advice ? Check at your anti-roll bar bushes !

Wink

They squeak on most vehicles, if not greased when assembled, so bring it back to the dealer, & bend over, for them to decide how much you can afford. Or STOP, look around, think, ask questions, LISTEN!!!!! Then try to put everything into perspective. Gather new parts, your tools, instructions with drawings, then jump in with both feet. Kick *** and take names, youll get it done, & feel GREAT about it. The harder you have to fight with the cat, the greater the satisfaction when your done. On many occasions the scrap will last for days, also it seems to be that some blood needs to be shed, not necessarily a lot. But it seems that i'm always bleeding somewhere, b4 the jobs are finished, no blood seems to say your not finished here yet,

Default Front wishbone replace

I has had the same noise but it didn’t fix the problem after I replace the upper control arms, I were you I will confirm the noise source. It take almost 4 hours to change both sides.

Yes, need to remove the whole front strut to remove from rear bolt😩😩

It should steer better, feel firmer, if the ball joints were worn much at all. Keeping at it gets it done, & your off to a good start. Always remember, people get rid of these cars, because resale makes it too expensive to fix at the dealer. As well as the fact most people who can afford to buy these cars, do not want to get dirty, sweat, & grunt, to fix them, and the new model looks so much nicer. Best part is these peoples forms of abuse, seems to be neglect, instead of the type of abuse, normal wear & tear, of say a Honda, or Toyota. Rich people tend not to try to tear things up, in the same ways as us unwashed masses, of the lower classes. Abuse like that, shows up pretty quickly, it just looks bad, to have a car that's showing its age. Snob appeal, gotta love it!!!
