Transmission Squawk! Research
Well, I get the squawk when my tranny downshifts sometimes. Apparently it's not a problem, just annoying.
Here's the TSB on the noise: http://www.jagrepair.com/images/TSB/XJ/JTB00040NAS2.pdf
I'm also getting some harsh shifts sometimes, I think I need the tranny adaptations wiped.
Here's details of what I've found:
*the noise is the 'E clutch' sticking when it shifts
*it's not a danger to the transmission.
*Apparently the special ZF additive in the TSB had been out of production for a few years, but there may be some on stock (or they are making it again).
*I see that Gaudin Jaguar has it listed on their website.
*The original part # has also been superseded by part # JLM21906
*However, it is 'liquid gold' as it's $164 a liter!
*Some people thought the additive had been included in the ZF lifeguard fluid, and thus why production was stopped, but others say No, including Klaus at ctsc.
So my question is: What to do? add the additive, or try to just do a fluid/filter?
My '05 has ~90k on it now; torque converter was replaced at ~45k and it was thought the fluid also, but I only see 1 liter listed on the dealer print out (is that right? did they just reuse the old fluid?).
What do you think?
I'm thinking find a good indy shop to do the adaptation wipe and fluid/filter. See if that takes care of it, if not, drain another liter and pay the $$$ for the additive. It appears that the fluid is 'ONLY add if you need it' per ZF - so it's not like it's particularly benefit to the tranny.
I can live with the Squawk, but the harsh shifts I don't like that much.

Well I was following the same path as you. I was going to change the fluid/pan/filter/sleeve/pan bolts on my 2005 STR.
Could not find the special additive and was told it was discontinued because it now was in every jug of Lifguard6. So I had the service done and I never had that noise before but I do now when it's 40F or lower out. Goes away with just a short amount of driving.
But I am now like you debating if I should do another fluid change or attempt to get this new (is it new or did they just release the first additive again?) additive and add it to my transmission.
If you do add the special stuff please post back if it fixed your noise. I really think the harsh shifting will be the TCM reflash and is not related to the fluid. I have only rarely had any of the Lurch symptoms so I consider myself lucky!

I'm still torn, other notes I had:
*one member in one of those links did the new fluid/filter service and the noise went away.
*I think Klaas also said something like 'everyone who has put in the additive has had the noise go away'.
I too think the sometimes harsh shifting is not related.

I get a light one second vibration as it down shifts from second into first. It seem to go away on a warm day. It doesn't do it in any other gear and up shifts like silk. She's just about to hit 80K miles and I am planning on a tranny flush.
