I'd just go with a stand alone Garmin or whatever. A friend of mine with an XJ8 has the same pain about the Jag system so just bought a Garmin to use whenever he goes on a trip. Can also use it in his other vehicle.

On my X350, a UK 2003 model as we had them a bit before the US, I had a similar problem with inputting the details, however when I updated the disc to a 2007 disc it also updated the firmware and made it possible to input the address on the move.
I am now using a 2012/2013 disc that I only loaded in a few weeks ago.

Not sure if the same would work over there with your map discs, hopefully someone may be able to help you if they are driving around in a newer car with newer disc.
