Default Undertray: 2004 XJR

Pictured is a new undertray from a Jag dealer on the internet.

Removed mine to do some work; discovered an oil leak & fixed it Now it is time to clean undertray & reinstall.

The plastic-like coating over the foam pads has disintegrated. Should this be replaced? With what?

Seems like something could be sprayed on the pads? It would have to be fireproof, etc.

Any ideas? Thanks, SS

I need one of those!
My car was not fitted with the pan when I bought it . A wrecking yard I spoke to said that the Jags he buys rarely comes with one since they are treated badly before they arrive.
You could drill out the rivets and recover the insulation pads. Or just removed the pads and clean the rest .

Thanks, Tigre. Mine aren't riveted. The pads are attached to little plastic nubs. The nubs aren't removable; the fabric around the foam pads are pushed over the nubs.

Forgot to mention that in the workshop manual the part is referred to as the "engine air deflector". I believe the plastic covers on the left & right & behind the engine air deflector are also called undertrays?

Personally I would just get rid of the pads.
Got rid of mine as they were disintegrated.
I had them on an undertray on a previous car, a Landrover. All they did was soak up transmission oil from a small leak that I would have discovered earlier if the pads hadn't been there

i removed mine and cleaned it...then sprayed it with undercoating spray which made it look new. I also removed the foam pads to clean them. I reinstalled without the plastic covering since they were 90% removed. Since the install i've had no issue.

Thanks, guys. Acceler8, how did you attach? Did you cover them with anything? I imagine their purpose is to prevent sound/vibration or chafing? Was the undercoat oil base?

the plastic shield has protruding plastic studs with larger tips on the end. This way, you just pull the foam around the tip to remove. Super easy and to install its the same...just slightly stretch the foam around the stud tip. Simple but works great.

The undercoating comes in a spray can and mainly used for spraying underneath car or trucks. Similar to truck bed liner spray. You can get them at any auto parts store for around $12 or so per can. I believe it took one large spray can to do mine as i just did the side that faces the ground, but I did clean both sides.

Oh, I didn't recover the foam. I just cleaned them and reattached to shield.

After Action:

All of your help contributed to a successful project.

I patched a small (4x6") hole using fiberglass cloth & resin. Decided not to recondition and reinstall the pads because I ran out of time. Will save for a later date.

Level of difficulty: easy

What I would do differently: I have a set of ramps that only lifts the front about 8". This was fine for removing the undertray, but made reinstallation a little difficult; so, I would take a little more time to jack & put up higher with stands.

Glad the project went well....super easy and really saves money over trying to purchase one used. Almost impossible to find one in good condition on the used market anyway. I hear you on the ramps as this is how i did mine. Would love one of those garage lifts.
