Default Vibration from the rear.

Hi All

My recently acquired XJ8 (X308) LWB suffers a mild vibration at about 50MPH which almost goes away at 70, then returns with a vengeance above that (on a private road obviously)

It could just be rear wheel balance, but it feels more like a prop or driveshaft issue to me, perhaps the prop centre bearing? Is there a common fault here to help narrow down my search?

Cheers

Glen.

Try rotating your tires and see if the vibration changes. If it feels different or you can feel it in the steering wheel, then you'll know its probably in the tires or wheels

Thanks, I had the rear tyres balanced today, but didn't get a chance to get to a road where I could open her up to 70 plus, so we shall have to wait and see.

+1 vote with MUDDYBEAR. Not many problems showing up, to date, in the rear end that would cause your symptoms. Anything is possible of course but first things first.

Ok, rear wheels balanced and the vibes are better, but still not gone away completely. I'm considering getting a second hand propshaft complete with centre bearing for £38 to try. Inexpensive and could fix it? Fairly easy to fit I think too.

Freebird, maybe a post in the X308 section of the board would yield more responses. This is the X350/X358 section.

The rear wheels may be balanced, but one or both of those tyres may have a 'flat spot' on them. If so, the vibration that you're experiencing would probably begin at around 70 MPH.
