Default Well, well, well....

Was poking around under the hood of my recently purchased XJ8 and came across this:

I don't have any service records that would show exactly what was done. What would this usually entail? Does this mean my car has been 'chipped', or is this likely some sort of repair?

Hard to say! Go to your local Jaguar dealership give them your vin# and they will be happy to tell you.

that was most likely due to recall or tsb.

J004 has been mentioned a few times on the forum. Here is one example:

I had some kind of recall on my 04 VDP recently that required some kind of reprogramming. I think it was ECM related.

Thanks for the info. You'd think this sort of thing would just be logged in the service manual. I find it odd that they'd slap a label on the car. Why do it for that particular service and no other?

I think it is an emissions campaign. I've had my car at the dealer once and this campaign popped up. Just an ecm reflash. There are many like this that do not require a letter being sent to the customer or mandatory repair . It's done if the car shows up for service or other issues

In my experience, reducing emissions usually means reducing power

Not necessarily. I noticed no change in power after mine was done nor have I after flashing cars myself. Your thinking about emission devices from the 70's and 80's It's not like that anymore. If you payed good money to have a chipped or programmed performance ECM, then yes, your screwed. It usually wipes that info out

The label was attached because it signifies a recall and modification involving the emissions on-board diagnostic programming was done; it's a Federal mandate. In California the label required is salmon colored. The ECM was reprogrammed to alter some OBD fault detection software that was too sensitive in some cases and not sensitive enough in others.

Cheers,

I am fairly certain there was a post on this last year with a very similar photograph.
