Well.... I finally got done with the rust patching, etc. on the rear of the car... I even put something like dynamat (more like peel and seal from lowes)...

When I got to re-installing the seats, it looked like there is a big gap under the bottom part... in the rear/back part of the seats there is an asphalt pad with some under-carpet lining.... but I don't remember if the bottom part of the seats had any padding (that thick black rubber or under carpet or carpet itself)....

any help is appreciated.

FWIW, my '88 XJS Coupe didn't have any padding there.

as it turns out, there is, in fact, padding...

I went through all the things I had taking out from it, and in a black, trash bag, I found one of those black/dark gray foam pads... it had all the markings from under the rear seat (this is the only thing that helped me to ID'd it)...

So as of right now, I'm done with the inner rear of the car...

I wish I had a beer to celebrate

 

Of the many times that I've removed the rear seat cushions in order to run wires, lines, etc. to the trunk and back, I've never have removed any material that lays in-between the cushion and the metal. In fact, I have a picture that I took when I was installing my in-back cushion subwoofer enclosure and all I see is this dark grey foamy material, not thicker than 1", laying on the metal.

But this is strictly an insulation issue, rather than a passenger cushioning one, as I don't even think that my two 20Lb cats would fit back there. In fact, I've been seriously thinking about going pre '94 (mine's a '94) with an inside-trunk, as close to OEM install as possible. It looks better and it's by far more functional, as the '94 XJS has no locking compartments other than the trunk. It gets old with people who look at my rear seats asking me all the time "who could possibly fit in there?" The pre-'94 XJS makes more sense and so did all those Mercedes SL's of yore and, I believe, still most of the newer ones?

Yes, that foam is what I was looking for... I finally found it and reinstalled it... I also put a "seal-and-peel" relative to help with noise isolation.

I think the xjs is a "drivers'" car... not much rear leg room.

 

The pre-'94 XJS is a two seater "Sports Car" for insurance purposes. The '94 -'96 XJS is a four seat, two door sedan for insurance purposes. Much Much lower insurance rates.

I agree with the pre'94 interior being superior.
