What is this bracket, and is it why my hood won't latch?
About 2 months ago, I was having trouble opening my hood. The cable was frozen near both under-hood latches.
A friend and I used some expensive lubricant and unfroze the cable, and I greased up the latches, and the hood worked fine again for a month.
A few days ago, I found this bracket dangling from the far right end of the black plastic sheet that goes under my 2004 XJ8's engine compartment, just where it meets the front right bumper.
This bracket was threaded through a hole as if someone had hung it there.
I opened my hood (the car was in my garage) to remind me to post a message here asking what the bracket might be.
Several days later, I still hadn't posted the message, and my hood was still open. I had to use the car, but when I shut the hood, the latches wouldn't latch.
The cable moved freely, the latches moved freely; they just wouldn't latch in place when the hood was shut, and the hood would bounce back up.
Any idea what that bracket is, what might cause the latches to stop latching, and whether the two are connected?
Or whether leaving my hood up for several days might cause the latches to stop latching?

Reason: rename thread
Xj8 side along the engine near and below the coolant expansion reservoir are 2 aluminum pipes going towards the firewall then to the heatercore inside cabin . It is probably of the connection between the coolant rubber hoses and those aluminum pipes (safety pin)
I would guess that the latching mechanisms need cleaning and lubrication, at least I would try that first. The clip could be for a coolant-hose connector. I haven't removed one in awhile, but it looks similar. There are several in use in these cars. My guess is that these are unrelated, and your initial problem is with the latch mechanisms. Good luck!
I am pretty sure that it is not a bracket of the cooling hoses. The last picture shows one, and it looks totally different than the first picture posted.
I am guessing here, but could it be part of the latching mechanism of the hood?

The latches were just lubricated a couple of weeks ago. I forced each latch closed once with a screwdriver, then opened them, and then they worked again. I'm perplexed, but not complaining. Keeping my fingers crossed now.
The mystery bracket isn't any kind of hose clamp, because its shape can't clamp a hose.
A key difference between the pictures you and I posted is that, on the legs on your bracket, the feet point in opposite directions.
The feet on mine both point outwards. This is for a bracket where each foot goes through a hole, and you squeeze the legs together to get them into the hole; and the whole bracket then rotates around the feet, while the squarish other side clamps onto something in one position, and unclamps from it if you swing the bracket the other way.
There are brackets of this type holding the headlight lamps in, for instance.
I did replace a headlight lamp on that side of the car not long ago, so it could have been something in that mess.
Google claims there is an XJ8 part# JEP105001, "Hood Release Cable Clip", but I haven't found any pictures of one. And I guess the hood release cable was a red herring.
The clips described by others are used in the quick-connect hose fittings made by the German company Norma. The item shown in your photo looks more like the latching clip or "bail" for a Bosch-style electrical connector. But I can't think of a connector on an X350 that uses this type of clip. Most have the more modern plastic clip tabs.
Here are a couple of examples of the bail type of electrical connector I'm describing:
Regarding your hood latches, check the release handle inside the car to be sure it is springing back into the latched position. Sometimes they bind and remain in the open or partially open position, preventing the hood latches from working.
BTW, it's always helpful if you add your Jaguar's year, model and engine to your signature so we know what vehicle you're inquiring about.
"2004 XJ8" wasn't specific enough? It's the base model, not a Vanden Plas, no supercharger. I don't know what other options can be specified.
I see it now, buried in the text of your original post. Yours is not the only thread the rest of us are monitoring, so it helps to add your vehicle details to your signature so they appear in every post you make, so we don't have to go back and re-read your original post every time.
I would suggest you add to your signature: 2004 X350 XJ8 4.2L
Looking at his clip you can see the ends face in the same direction. So I think Don is correct that it's an electric plug retainer. Those almost always have the ends facing the same way.
What I posted is properly called a NORMA clip as stated above. They usually have the ends facing opposite directions.

Crossing fingers didn't work. The hood is shut and latched, but the console says BONNET OPEN.
