Default What do I need to order and from whom to rebuild the front end? It rattles like glass

So for about 35000 miles now my front end has rattled when I hit any kind of bump, small pot hole, etc.

What could it be? I have read some very discouraging post about how hard some of these pieces are to get off, and my car has 137,000 miles on it.

If someone can point me in the right direction, I would apprecaite it. Is there a front end rebuild kit? Is it that simple? I can only surmize that the rubber bushings are worn out. Are there some threads, or website diagrams that will give me step by step instructions? I did have one rear strut replaced, now I have to do the other rear strut. Arnolt had a good video on youtube that illistrated this step by step.

Hi A Dopo,

I'm only going on what I've read of others work, so may be easier to search for info through old posts.
Your first 'problem' is that it could be several different issues - Front lower wishbone bushes, front lower shock bush to name but a couple.
I think it was Cambo351 that pointed the forum in the direction of a polybush kit for the s-type - Kit 153
Your best bet (unless you want to buy yourself a press and have the inclination to get dirty) is to take it to an Indy to identify the problem and fit the ones you need. Luckily I dont have any rattles etc from my suspension yet, but I will be buying a polybush kit for when they do start!

This thread may help... https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-clunk-103528/

Do you know the history on the front suspension? Is it all original? Is it an XJR or XJ8?

at that mileage, your suspension bushes would have needed to be replaced twice. When were they last done? Start with that.

The other thing is that at the front, there is a substantial crash beam. It is rivetted on, and there is a well-known fix, when the rivets come loose, to drill then out and replace with nuts and bolts. I have not had to do it, but would certainly use stainless bolts if I did.

A Jag Indie will know, if you have one within reach, as both of these are quite common problems.

Thanks for the post. I assume an indie is a mechanic or shop? Interesting, what is the origin of this word? I understand a *** is a cigarette in England...an indie here would be an Indian or I could surmise an Indy race fan lol.

Having watched Top Gear I know what a slope is...

Now for the bushings, is buy a press in reference to this? Love the 350 model, but they will eat you alive once they start to get over 100K it seems.

Independent specialist garage, ie. not a dealer.

Hi A Dopo!

An "indie" is an independent Jaguar specialist mechanic, as opposed to a Jaguar dealer service department.

I watch Top Gear, but I don't know what a "slope" is other than an incline, ramp or hill..., so it's your turn to educate me!

Cheers,

Don

I have never heard of the word being used in that way.

You need to check all the bushes and the crash beam first as has already been said but also

bear in mind that the shock inside the air suspension unit can fail and become very noisy.

Riveted crash beam?? Can someone post a pic or a diagram on where this thing is?

Thanks for the link, A Dopo. I saw that episode of Top Gear and would never have made the connection of the word "slope" with a racial slur. Before we're done we'll have no politically-correct vocabulary left.

Cheers,

Don

At that mileage and as stated your suspension should probably have been done at least once, perhaps even twice....

Get the front banana arm bushes and shocker bushes, rear wishbone bushes and shocker bushes all checked and go from there....

Hi Don b

With ref to your last post about politacal correctness I referred to *** ends in

one of my posts and a moderator deleted it!

As has been said,a *** end is a cigarette end (butt).

Do you laugh or cry?

Can I say butt? LoL

Lagonia

These are the brackets which hold the crash beam in place-these can also get loose and rattle.

I believe the beam is behind the front bumper (plastic)
