Default Windshild Wiper Not Functioning

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year!

Yesterday morning, the passenger side (U.S.) wiper got crossways with the one on the driver's side. Turned wipers off and headed home. In the garage, the errant wiper seemed to have a little play in it. I put it back where it belonged and they worked fine in the garage. While my wife was driving her this morning, the passenger side quit working altogether.

I haven't looked at it yet, but, I suspect, that either the spline is stripped (unlikely?), the motor is broken, or something else. Has anyone had any experience with this?

I plan to look at it this evening. Any words to the wise much appreciated.

Steve S.

Problem solved? The nut was loose, tightened & it seems to work well. I thought that there was a spline type attachment; if so, the loose nut may have allowed the wiper to rise above it? Anyhow, you'll hear no more complaints from me if it keeps working properly.

Thanks and Happy New Year!

Hi Steve
On some old British cars there was a sort of spline on the wiper drive shaft. On X350s the wiper is held in place by friction only with no splines. This works well as long as the nut is tight. The torque for the nut is 17 Nm or 13 lb-ft. If the arms need to be removed there is a puller that helps break the taper free.

Default Pete Is Right!

As his wife is known to say: "He isn't only Mr. Right; he is Mr. Always Right!!".

Seriously, Pete, I believe the wipers on my Healy from back in the 60s had splined attachments & I assumed that this car did, too. So, when I put them back on, I wasn't attentive to the proper torque.

Pleased to report, they're good as new!

Thanks again & Happy New Year!!
