X350 ECM / ECU Replacement
Greetings all,
I have '06 XJ with a normally aspirated 4.2 engine.
The ECM is faulty. At times, 3 of the cylinders don't fire and the engine diagnostic system produces fault codes for 3 of the coils. The coils have been checked, replaced, and the wiring has been checked to and traced back to the ECM.
The costs to replace the ECM with a new unit would be horrendous running to approximately 3k CAN.
What I would like to do is replace the ECM with a used unit salvaged from a same or similar XJ.
My question is; can the ECM be changed without reprogramming?
Thanks

Thanks for the input.
Another question; can the ECM be repaired? If so, would it require reprogramming?
Any recommendations or referrals of shops that repair ECMs in Canada or the US?

I think perhaps the question should be "can the ECM be changed with a used one" and the answer is yes. I believe you would have to program a replacement ECM regardless if new or used.
Yes, why buy new when slightly used will do? It's going to require reprogramming with SDD (Jaguar's tech system) and it has to be done in a sequence with removal of the old one and installation of the new one. They don't just swap them out and off you go. So the question I would ask the shop is what is the cost if you bring your own ECU. They are easy to remove and install so the labor will be in the reprogramming and how much time it takes to reprogram as the car will occur a bay (which costs money).

Info for you from Jaguar.
WDS was the devise we had when this was issued but IDS and probably SDD are the more modern equivalents.

Hello all,
Thanks all for the replies and input.
It seems I can't avoid some programming with proprietary software. Is the WDS / IDS / SDD software available to download or otherwise aquire?

Software is generally available but the pass through devices are not that cheap to come by.
Or, you can find someone local to you with the above and the "know how" to re-flash a new PCM to your vehicle.
Correct - you need the software, a legit pass through device (Rotunda VCM or Mongoose) and a computer.

I would also add a battery maintainer. Not your common garden variety either.
I use an Astron 50
I set desired voltage to 13.6V and the supply holds it there!
I have been through this with my XJR. I had a water damaged ECU that decided one day to give up. I spent an age looking for a second hand replacement I heard of buying another one and having it "cloned" but in the end I had to take it in the wallet and but anew one. The ECU alone was £1200 by the time the Car was driven out of the garage I had a bill of £2600 but at least I know it has been done correctly and even with a Jag specialist it was still quite a long process to complete the work.
The 'previously owned' ecm was sourced, it has been fitted, and programmed. It does seem to be the case that one ecm can't be changed with another without programming. Now the engine is once firing on all eight cylinders.
The cost for the replacement ecm and labour, by an independent specialist, was approximately a third the cost quoted by a dealership.
Subsequently, the (mass) air flow sensor proved at fault and this too has been addressed.
Thanks to all for your input.
