I have a 1999 XJ8 with 126k miles. Dealer tells me it needs new transmission -- $8k! What can I do with this beloved auto?

Welcome to the forum! Your '99 XJ8 is a factory code X308, so you may receive more knowledgeable replies if you repost your question at the X308 forum. I would also suggest that you include the actual symptoms that prompted you to take the car to the dealer for inspection, and any additional detail the dealer may have offered about the diagnosis.

Rudy there are many posts about this transmission. I repaired mine for under a thousand dollars. Rebuilds are in the 2-3000 range. Do some research, and don't give up on the car.

Or call a car salvage company and get a transmission from them. Most of these companies are all linked now so if they don't have one, they can point you to another salvage company that does. You are taking a chance but it won't be anywhere near 8K.
