Default Yahoo, worse used cars list.....

We have all seen and heard about these. I can agree with some of the cars listed but under Jaguar (they picked one from each manufacturer) they had this to say.

Jaguar: The chance of you owning a Jaguar that will be kept past 180,000 miles is a little worse than 37 to 1. Every Jaguar in our study has terrible long-term reliability—except for the Jaguar XJ which has a few glimmers of hope; especially from 2006 thru 2008.

Now I am pleased that they say the 06-08 are the part of the "glimmers" but I know its been discussed here and on other Jaguar forums about the reality of it all.

I had an 94 XJ last 160K when I sold it, a 95 XJ that I sold with 150K and only the cruise didn't work (diaphragm melted).

But then we know the stigma on Jags and Range Rovers (have one of them also) is you don't want one with over 100K. I don't agree to this at all as I believe if you maintain your vehicle and have regular inspections for the non common things (suspension) that your vehicle, no matter what make, will last as long as you want it too.

Open for discussion.... if you want to chime in.

The editor of the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club magazine took his to 230,000 miles and only had to get rid when a deer ran out in front of the car and the insurance company wrote it off. A new gearbox was needed very early in the car's life in 2004 under the Jaguar warranty, but that's the only mechanical problem, I believe. Of course there was the crevice corrosion issue, but this didn't stop the car running and running.

I'm in the UK - rain, salt etc, and I have just retired my 2002 XJ8 SE 4.0L at 240,000 miles. Apart from oil, plugs, filters etc the engine has never been touched. Original pumps, alternator, radiator, gearbox ....... !

What's more it was the most reliable car I ever owned - never failed to start, never broke down, and always got me home. I was really sad to retire it, but the suspension couldn't go on for much longer.

PS - it was serviced by my local garage - not a Jaguar dealership or even an Indie.

traded my 3.5SE last year with 204000 miles, had a few issues while I had it like suspension arms, but that seemed normal to me.
Previous Jaguars had been traded at anywhere between 140000 and 180000 miles, generally very pleased with the reliability.

Aaawww...they're still stuck on the XJS. They forgot to talk to more recent owners.

They are unlikely to be including many vaguely modern Jaguars. E.g. I hang out in the S-Type forum a lot and we've a LOT of cars but almost no-one has done much more than about 120,000 miles as yet. Many have yet to do 100,000. Yet the cars are 10-15 years old and running well. Most problems are quite easy, well known & cheap fixes.

So, a stupid benchmark for yahoo to use. Deliberate bias, maybe. At 8-12,000 miles per year (as largely the whole forum seems to drive) a year they're mainly looking at cars 15-20+ years old, which rules out almost all recent Jaguars.

A lot of Yahoo's articles are good for a laugh, and not much else. I enjoy reading a lot of the car articles that they post, but I disagree with a decent amount of what they have to say.

With that being said... I got a good laugh out of the chart. I have known several people with the misfortune of buying a Mini Cooper... and every one of them sold them as soon as the warranty expired. My one buddy bought one brand new(followed the build process online, and the boat ride over to the states), and couldn't take it home, because it had issues out of the gate. His timing chain chewed up his timing gear at about 46K miles, and turbo blew at 49K miles. He had a 50K mile warranty, so he traded it in as soon as it was fixed.

Most people buying a Jaguar new from a dealership are not going to drive it until the wheels fall off. They will drive it either until the lease runs out, or they find a newer model that they want. At that point, they get sold to the rest of us, that drive the wheels off of them!

What I found interesting that other than Japanese "Luxury" brands; all other luxury brands are in the same "boat". I have a theory... People who buy European luxury cars are afraid to drive them past the warranty. So they trade them in after their CPO or extended warranty expire (100k-120k miles). Japanese "luxury" share common drive-train components with their "economy" lines and as a result... their owners are more willing to risk driving them. They look at Lexus ES and say this is a camry with leather. It will easily last 200+k.

I wonder if anyone on this forum would accept this mentality and not worry about miles on the odo?

I'm past 120K miles but getting past the 180K miles mentioned will take me about another 8 years to car about 20 yrs old. I expect it to have failed for something else first - rust or overall wear and tear - or I may well have bought something smaller so sold my STR...

I've only been around here for about 6mos and for the most part have been checking the S-Type forum.. I got bored because sometimes for several days there would be few new posts so I started checking the "new posts" all models and noticed how few S-Type posts are there . EDIT: I just checked new posts and page one has 1 S-Type and 5 from the XJ forum..Page 2 has 9 from XJ and again 1 for S-Types .. Now I'm off to read this Yahoo thing.

I have over 100K on my XJ8L now and it still drives like a new car. Granted I've had to replace some consumables but overall, it has been pretty reliable. As long as I can keep it running I'll continue to drive it.

I have been pretty happy with my Jaguars so far. My 1992 XJS is now on 116,000 miles and once I have gone through it to fix the problems from it sitting for 5 years, dropped valve seat just before my cancer diagnosis sidelined me and the car until I got back on my feet, it has been very reliable and brings smiles every time I drive it. I have taken it on a few long trips and I wouldn't hesitate to take it anywhere.

My 1995 XJ6 was purchased 4 tears ago for $2000.00 with 167,000 miles on it. It has been the best $2000.00 car I have ever bought. My daughter is now driving it as her car. It has 182,000 miles on it now and has only left her stranded one time and that was a loose ground strap.

My 2006 XJ8L is at 117,000 miles and looks and drives like new. It was a one owner who had it serviced at the same dealer since he bought it. I hope to drive that until I can't drive anymore. Proof that a well maintained car will probably go for many miles.

I do most of the maintenance on my own cars so I know these cars inside and out now.
I'm not sure why the Yahoo's at Yahoo would dis the brand.

XJs look pretty darn good for 2006, 2007, and 2008 on the defect chart. I am amused by the Smart having the lowest trades with 180K miles; I bet the drivers died before the cars ever got to 180K.

Had my 2008 / 2009 XJ coming up for 2 years now and added around 31k to the 61k on it when I bought her.
She's my daily driver and often does short stop / start journeys with the 500+ long haul motorway runs too.

There was a lot of issues coming due, probably why the PO got rid but I gladly took them on and a lot of it has been covered either by the warranty I got with the car and or the extended warranty I bought. It been most suspension and diff problems I've resolved.

Over and above that there's been a lot of "I want to do" items that I've tackled to personalise her somewhat.
I've really enjoyed the experience in getting her to where she is today and plan to push forward with her in the New Year to further improve her.
She's been very reliable to date and hasn't let me down once, love it, love it, love it.

People still think my `04 is less than a couple years old. And @ 115,000 it still rides and drives like new. Expect maintenance on any vehicle.

2006-2008 were the strong years? Mine has been a nightmare though I love it. It's got to get better, right? That said people have a hard time placing the age as mentioned and those not in the know(almost everyone) seem to think you are a millionaire driving an XJ.

i have a 04 Vanden Plas and I just put 3700 miles on my trip and it now has 184000 + on it and got on average 26 mpg in the mountains. I don't think it likes really cold weather but it ran fine. I'd do it again.
