Default 1996 xjr - lost power to instrument panel

Hi, I was driving along and heard a loud bang from the front passenger side, and then noticed I had lost power to the dashboard instrument panel. The lights and windows still work but nothing happens when I turn the ignition on.

Any suggestions or ideas what may have blown up? Has the body processor module blown up?

Thanks

Trevor Smith, Austin, Texas

The instrument cluster has 2 or 3 fuses in the left heelboard fuse box

Some but not all fuses in the fuses boxes require the relay in the corner of the fuse box to close

with the key in the run position but engine not started you can remove the relay and feel it click back open in your finger tips

There is a light dimming module you can put in override for full instrument brightness

See page 22 of the Jaguar LWB pdf

On the front right side near the passenger right foot is a inertia / crash switch that can trip

You can depress the button to reset but does not always reset so you jumper the 2 white wires with a paper clip

This will bring the engine back to life

This is a pic of a right hand steering model as the inertia switch will always be on the far right side

Not that it would cause instrument cluster failure, but when the the exhaust manifold cracks, it will set off a bang! Its on the passengers side of the engine bay...

This is a longshot but related to electrical power

Under the car on the left side near the alternator is a noise suppressor that is not found on all X300 models

It is a black vertical cylinder with 2 wires attached to the alternator with a 2 wire connector

Remove at the connector and leave the pigtail wires attached to the alternator least they be reconnected on the alternator wrong

It is a capacitor and when they blow for what ever reason you would know

We used to plug capacitors into the wall plugs in engineering collage for kicks with a bang
