Default 1997 xj6 antenna

Got in the car and turned the radio on and it made a grinding noise as it went up. I got out immediately and wiped WD40 on it and left it alone. Then I was turning off the radio and it makes the same grinding noise but now it's stuck up and won't go down. What could be the problem?

just a point to note... when wiping lubricant to an antenna, go from bottom to top, as not to jam dirt into the sections.

Well, on other cars I've had, it's a stripped plastic gear.

OK I have a similar problem. No grinding noise from the antenna, but the mast won't go up or down on it's own and lubrication is no longer helping. So is there a particular part that can be replaced or does the whole thing need to be?

You can buy:

LNA4134AA : Aerial Mast

from Jaguar for around $135 or source an aftermarket replacement for about one third of the cost.

if the motor and gears seem to be ok you can get just the mast from rockauto.com for about 10.00$. i replaced mine and it wouldnt go down all the way. after disassembling it i noticed an old part of the plastic part of the antennae still in there. after removing that it works great.
