Default 1997 xj6 Clock

odd thing happened last week
as my clock has always glowed bright green showing no numbers
and all of a sudden it displayed the correct time as my son pointed out
as we motored down the road
but alas after stopping turning off the key the short lived clock has returned to it's former self

Anyone have any idea why this was ? as I know the dark night Lucas was Forded away

Thx

Clock problems are common on these cars. I think its usually the ribbon wire to the display. There is a guy on Ebay from time to time who rebuilds them or you could Google the subject. Some guys have fixed the problem themselves by putting cardboard behind the ribbon wire attachment to exert pressure and firm up the connection....or something like that.

Cheers

That clock is easy to fix if you can solder and know what to look for on the circuit board. Almost always a bad solder joint or poor connection at the cable as mentioned in last post.

I've no problem with removing the clock and attempting a repair, but one thing has always prevented me from tackling it is this. When the clock is out of the car, in my house and I'm trying to fix it, how do I power it up to check as I go along?
Is the only way to connect it back up to the car's system, see if it's 'repaired' yet and if not, disconnect it ,try again and keep repeating this until it works?

This is the email address of the ebay guy, currently repairing them for 75 bucks. Very quick turnaround. Display is then a little brighter green than stock, but nice. And it works. Very easy to access the clock, takes about 30 minutes to remove the gear shift surround (spring clips), remove the ash tray (accessed by raising the console lid and removing two screws), which will expose two bolts that hold the ski slope in place. From then on, very obvious what to unattach--couple screws hold the radio...

Had a go at the pizza box fix over the last weekend. When I had it stripped down, couldn't get any any lasting effect by pressure on the connection. After a frustrating hour, put it all back together and with no numbers showing went to look up the company that might do the rebuild. However, next morning as I got into the car, I noticed the clock was showing. It's still working fine after a week. The age of miracles is still with us.
