Default 3.2 rescued from scrapper!!

I spotted this poor old girl languishing in a yard near me and made enquiries. She was destined for breaking so i asked could i rescue her. The owner kindly agreed a very reasonable price and informed me all paperwork was present and she drove to her final resting place 3 years ago and the wheels were removed. I duly returned with a battery, some fuel and a set of xj40 wheels i had spare. She fired up straight away and i drove her home. Some pics of before and after cleaning........

Man, good deal! Looks like the car isn't in bad shape at all, so that's great you were able to save it

Bit of lacquer peel on the roof and a slight blow in the exhaust, thats about all thats wrong. Couldn't leave her to be scrapped, it would be a sin.

Default Well done!

Always worth saving from the scrapper. I'm also in Ireland, down in Kerry and have a 3.2 donor car in one of my sheds. My daily driver is a 4.0 litre, so some of the components aren't interchangeable. So, if you're stuck for anything, let me know. If it's no use to me, you're welcome to it.

Do you intend to put it on the road? Some more pics would be nice too.

She is going in storage for the moment anyhow alongside the others. Might give it a run in the summer. 444 euro of tax buys 3 months driving! What a rip off. The car cost less than half that! Joke of a taxation system. Thats why there are so few of these left.

Don't get me started on our crazy tax system! I usually tax mine quarterly but it was due at the end of this month and I was in a position to do it for the year and so , I bit the bullet.

Nice to have it out of the way for a year but not so nice to see €1,805 disappear from my bank account. Like you say, it's the tax that is the demise of so many great big cars here in Ireland, whereby, the Government gets absolutely nothing from them. (sigh)

Whereabouts are you based?

As I started reading the thread, I thought this would be the reason the PO was going to scrap the vehicle.

Pleased to see you saved it.

Is the tax that high on all vehicles or just these particular ones? I'm guessing to put pressure to buy a plastic hybrid POS?

Wow, I think mine is also around $20 a year. That's a shocking amount of tax.

Now, if I were being taxed for its original sale price, then it could be hundreds of $ a year, but it is based on current market value here.

.

Yeah I don't miss NC vehicle taxes just a straight $24 for a yearly tag here in TN regardless of vehicle age or cost.

The motor tax system here in the Republic of Ireland is excessive and unfair on many levels. It is based, for the most part, on engine size. So, a small 1.3 litre engined car doing ten times the annual mileage of my 4.0 litre car, will still only pay a fraction of the road tax that I do. The tax is based on ownership and not use and is paid annually.

I feel that I pay enough tax already on my petrol, at about 65cent for every Euro I spend at the pumps. For those Stateside, our petrol here works out at about the equivalent of $7.00 per gallon and our friends in the UK pay even more, although they pay much less in road tax. Having said that, I'd be happy enough to pay a bit more for petrol to cover the cost of road tax, based on an average, spread across all engine sizes. This would also eliminate tax dodging!

By the nature of my work, my car can remain parked up at work, for weeks at a time, but it still has to be taxed. As mentioned, this system is sending a lot of larger engined cars to the scrapper, perfectly good cars (such as the XJ6). Environmentally, it's a lot more harmful to produce a new car than to keep an old one on the roads.

So, as it stands, I pay €1,805 annually, or over €2,000 if I pay it quarterly. The only saving grace is a €56 annual tax on cars over 30 years old, regardless of size. With this in mind, I have another 12 years to go before my baby qualifies. A good incentive to keep it on the road, though heaven knows what motoring will be like in twelve years time. I shudder to think!

Below is an extract from the Irish Motor Tax website, explaining the rates and how they apply, so for those of you paying $20 a year, count your blessings!

The first series of numbers shows the cc, starting at 0-1,000.

The rates of taxation are as follows: Tax Band Annual Half Year Quarter Year Arrears (Per Month) 0 - 1000 199 110 56 19.90 1001 - 1100 299 165 84 29.90 1101 - 1200 330 183 93 33.00 1201 - 1300 358 198 101 35.80 1301 - 1400 385 213 108 38.50 1401 - 1500 413 229 116 41.30 1501 - 1600 514 285 145 51.40 1601 - 1700 544 301 153 54.40 1701 - 1800 636 352 179 63.60 1801 - 1900 673 373 190 67.30 1901 - 2000 710 394 200 71.00 2001 - 2100 906 502 255 90.60 2101 - 2200 951 527 268 95.10 2201 - 2300 994 551 280 99.40 2301 - 2400 1034 573 292 103.40 2401 - 2500 1080 599 305 108.00 2501 - 2600 1294 718 365 129.40 2601 - 2700 1345 746 379 134.50 2701 - 2800 1391 772 392 139.10 2801 - 2900 1443 800 407 144.30 2901 - 3000 1494 829 422 149.40 3001 - 15000 1809 1003 511 180.90

Yeah its extortionate our road tax system. And lets not get started about vehicle registration tax here in the emerald isle.... basically an extra completely inflated tax just to register a car being registered for the first time that has been deemed illegal by the European union. Trouble is that the amount earned by the state far outweighs the fines from Europe so it remains. The enthusiast car movement in Ireland is hounded by the state instead of being encouraged like it appears to be in the uk our nearest friends and neighbors. Sogood im based in the midlands near Meath.

With 87 octane at $2.57/gal and 93 octane below $3.00/gal as well it has been quite a relief here. At $7/gallon I would definitely not be driving or owning an XJR.

The systems for vehicle taxing seem to vary wildly around the world and it's fascinating to learn how much (or in some cases, how little) drivers pay in various countries. It varies by state in Aus, but here in the state of Victoria we pay an annual registration fee of $270 plus a mandatory third party insurance fee of $487, so the annual renewal is $757 all up. The insurance is purely for third party injury, not property or vehicle damage, we have optional comprehensive insurance for that. These fees apply to every passenger car regardless of age, size, or power output - if your car uses the road that's what you pay, but we think the cost is way too high. At 65yrs of age or older, then a pension concession of 50% applies.

We also have "club permit" schemes in most states for cars older than 25 yrs which enable us to circumvent the base reg. system. You need to be a member of a registered car club, and the permit (which replaces all the above costs) is around $130 per year including TPI for 90 days use within the year. Great system for owners of older "Sunday" cars. Can't wait 'till my old girl turns 25, or I might yet swap her for a nice Series III !!
