Default 95 XJ6 Code Reader?

This car is beginning to be as much trouble as my XK8, well no, not really.
I tried using my AutoEngiuity + Jag. but it quickly came back with no codes read. I at least thought I would get a P1111.
I took it to a friends house and he tried with his Sears unit, but it would not connect. Could it be that some '95s can not be read?

I bought an inexpensive reader that plugs into my laptop, and so far it reads and clears the codes fine in my 95.

How can I go wrong?
Anything special about operation that I might not know?

there's 3-4 different programs on the included disk - some better than others. I forget which I use.

I used my ultra gauge on my 95 and it worked except the fuel flow and mileage was off by a factor of 100. They use different base for fuel flow in 95 I guess. Other than that it seems to work on both the XK8 and XJ6. RJ237, how did we wind up with two Jags??

Yes 95 through 97 can be tricky to read the ECM, even the factory handheld, the Genrad GDS510, has trouble. The official line is that they don't strictly adhere to the SAE spec. Having said that I have never had issues when using a cheap scanner, my weapon of choice for quick no-frills scanning, Matco CAN400.

Having said all that, you should make sure there is power present at the OBDII socket.

EZDriver, The Ultragauge is reading temp at about 175, and says the fuel sender is inop. I don't know what thermostat is in there and I haven't used enough gas to see if the gas gauge is working, but the trip data is coming up okay.
As to why we end up with the same cars, we are either gluttons for punishment or just need our heads examined. Seriously though, I find it hard believe I could find two better looking cars, and they are both a pleasure to drive.

Ditto RJ on the cars. My wife primarily drives the XK8 just because it is newer. But loves driving the XJ6 better. In fact she told me she would rather spend money fixing up the XJ6 rather than on an expenxsive vacation. How many wifes have told their husbands that?

Glad your fuel measurement and mileage are coming out right. Like I said mine is off by a factor of 100 but is carrect other wise. Just a different standard measurement used. Works correctly on the XK8.

My tempt runs around 195 F. A little less and a little more. That is about where it should be. I think a 183 F stat will give about that tempt.

I've got the bluetooth version of the reader Tim posted - very cheap & works fine with various android apps. I did get a faulty one at the first attempt though!
