Default 96 XJ6 Telescoping steering wheel need help

I recently purchased a 96 XJ6 and the steering wheel could be pushed in and pulled out without the control,
I have removed the steering column and can see the plastic anchor that the adjustment threaded rod goes thru has stripped out.
Does anyone have a diagram that shows how to breakdown the column so that I can change out the anchor?
Thanks,
ScottO

Jaguar does not offer parts for the column, only complete column for the fault you are describing.

A salvage yard would be your best alternative to trying to repair yours.
I have replaced dozens of columns for that fault when I worked at the dealer.

Any 95-97 X300 column will fit.

I have just sent an emaill off to another member complete with pictures explaining the process. If you send me an email address, I'll send it on to you.

Sounds like a good opportunity for a "how to" thread posting

.

I'm sure I did post it on here quite a while back and simply responded to a pm from another member, when by coincidence, yet another member asked me for details.

But just to keep everyone happy, I'll post the same up again in the next day or so.

Oops! I just realised that the repair that I was talking about is the "motor reach cable" replacement. The OP seems to be having a different issue entirely!

I have posted the procedure in either the X308, X100 or X308 section. (I don't remember)
All the columns are built the same way so the installation and setup is the same.

If your cable is twisted and damaged, I would suggest that the feedback pot (position sensor) has failed or is 'intermittent' and will likely twist your new cable if the column is left in the 'AUTO' mode.

Basically you need to run the motor all the way IN until it stops (position sensor limit reached) and then turn the column reach threaded rod ALMOST all the way in. (preferably by hand)
Install the cable and it should be set.

The motor needs to STOP before the column threaded rod reaches bottom or the motor will keep going (stall) and twist the new cable or break the plastic threaded block. (it thinks it needs to keep going)

Even if you set it up correctly and the position sensor is faulty it will do it again.

good luck.
