Default 97 VDP trunk won't open - FIXED

I can't get the trunk lid open with key or inside trunk release, I disconnected the battery when I pulled the clock out and ever since then the trunk won't open everything else works fine. Any suggestions, is there any other way to open the trunk?

Did you try the key in the key barrel? If you get it open, look at the wiring on the right hinge and your probably gonna need to fix it there. Pull the loom back and cut out the zip ties and inspect for broken wires. I have seen plenty and there are even more helpful tips on the wiring repair here on the forum, but i have never seen a X300/308 not open from the key barrel.

If your completely locked out of trunk:

Remove license plate from vehicle, remove grommet from lower right(passenger) side of license plate holes in trunk lid.

Take a long thin screwdriver and slide it in and out towards the center of vehicle to try to push the latch inside.

I think I got luck it took me less than 3minutes the other day.

Others have bored large holes behind plate to get theirs open( i wouldnt do that to my car)

The key would not turn so I used the screwdriver trick and got the lid open and took out the tumbler and cleaned it really good now the trunk will open with the key. I checked the harness and could not find any broken wires so I will have to look into it further, at least I can open the trunk now. Thanks for the help.

Good deal. Glad you got it open. The license plate trick I thought only worked on XJ40's. Learn something new every day. I will use that one if I get locked out of mine!

or reconnect the battery....

Granted the hinge-wiring is a problem area...and good gouge to check it out....but I thought HD was saying his electric release was working just fine until he disconnected the battery. I'll admit to some puzzlement as to what the statement "...everything else works fine.." means.....does lead one to believe the battery is reconnected....but he can't do that until he gets the bootlid open again.....Glad to hear you got in through the license plate...Can't remember who...but I think we have a member around here who discovered his prev. owner didn't get this gouge....or else needed a Jag-colored sheet metal dinner plate......

If the vehicle is in "Valet" mode (switch in center console) wont that prevent the key or internal trunk button form opening the trunk?

I left the trunk lid open until I connected the battery again, by everything else working I mean when I lock the doors w/ key the all doors lock, alarm arms the fuel filler door locks and when I unlock them the alarm disarms, the rear doors unlock and the fuel door unlocks. Nothing changes when I mess with the valet button and I cheked the fuse for the boot lock which is also for the antenna and that works fine.

Default Problem solved

I found the problem, it was the micro switch mounted to the trunk latch. Thanks everyone for the help.

Good find! I had one of those throw me for a loop a long time ago. The switch would have continuity when it needed it but could not work properly under a voltage load. Strange problem but i still remember it. Those switches went bad a lot too. Good find.

Trunk saga!!! Continues . I only have upper grommets for plate holes. The plate lights buckets seem to be under the chrome Bessel.

There's a couple pieces of painted over tape covering the bottom holes. They are about four inches directly below the others.

I used a wire hanger with a hook bent on one end.

This is what you are trying to get to....
