'97 XJ6 wants to stall at stops when cold
For the first 15 minutes or so after starting...my 97 XJ6's rpm's will drop down to 4K rpm or lower when I come to a stop....and has stalled a few times. After its warmed up it doesn't do this anymore. I have just had a new battery installed so that's not the problem. Any ideas what could be causing this? When it happens at night my headlights will also dim down as I come to a stop.

The car shouldnt stall at 4000 rpms.
I agree with your assumption Ken with the lights dimming, however if 400 rpm was meant to be said, I would look at the idle control valve/solenoid. I am not sure on much on the XJ6s but I sure see alot of those valves getting changed....lol

gp,
FJT= Yoda!
My '97 VDP started this act about two weeks ago, although only occasionally. I haven't looked into it yet (no check engine light), but my first hunch was the idle control valve. The alternator goes off charge when the idle speed drops below somewhere around 500 RPM: any low voltmeter reading or dimming lights is an effect of the fault, not the cause. Don't throw alot of money at it unless you can identify the problem. I'll have a look at mine in the next few days, and let you know what I learn in case you haven't already gotten things straightened out.
