Default AJ16 timing gears

Hi all been a while since I have posted in the X300 section being a X350 owner now
I have been helping a mate with his X300 and its got its fair share of problems many I have been able to diagnose or deal with

We have noticed the timing chain is pretty worn

I have seen a few kits for sale but none have the gears with them just wondering if I just do the chains and guides and tensioner would that be enough
My mate wants to do the timing gears as well but these are astronomical in price and I don't think the car warrants that expenditure
My question is how many have changed timing chains and ancillary's and not the gears and are they happy with the job

I did mine at 140k kms, and did the chains, guides, tensioners, and NO gears. Now at 240k kms and sweet as.

Never did the gears on any XK, or V12, I have built over the years either.

The chains are the weaker item, and cheap enough.

Thanks Grant

I have noticed the intermediary sprocket is badly worn and looks like its missing some teeth using the inspection camera

My XJR had been done at 180,000 s when it had the head and timing chains done and so forth and was trouble free when I sold it this year at 240,000 k,s

This car has 204,000k,s and never been apart hence my questions it also makes a pretty loud squealing noise from the crank pulley at start up which makes me think its the harmonic balancer

The harmonic balancer went on my AJ6 engined 93 XJ Sovereign at 180,000 although the balancer on my AJ16 was original at 240,000 k,s and trouble free either way it looks like its going to be a costly repair

Mmmm.

Sounds like its had sloppy chains for quite a while.

I have a box of odd AJ16 stuff in the shed, timing chain, pistons, conrods, oil pump, crankshaft, etc from memory. I will look afte rwork tomorrow, and come back here with what I find.
