Default CD Changer Fitment

I Have a 1997 XJ-6 that only has a cassette player with the Radio. I have a CD Changer that came from a 1996 XJ6, the harness doesn't seem to have a plug for it unless I'm overlooking it or it's tucked away in the trunk someplace. Does anyone have any idea's.

Thanks in advance, Chuck

Firstly, is your radio/cassette the original Alpine unit? I ask because an aftermarket radio may not (probably won't) recognise the jaguar CD changer, due to incompatabillity issues.

If it is original, then the only wiring that I'm aware of is a pair of phono plugs that go from the radio to the CD changer. There may also be a black power supply that goes from the radio to the CD changer also.

It's dark, cold and wet outside, so thinking from memory, such as it is.

Hello sogood,

Yes the radio is the original, the changer is mounted in the trunk and has a round plug that will connect to a multi pin connector. maybe I should post some photos.

Thanks, Chuck

The Jaguar CD changer is a Jag branded Alpine changer. It is connected to the Jaguar (Alpine 9500) head unit via an Alpine M-Bus (DIN like) cable.

In theory, if you have the Jaguar Alpine head unit, you can fit any M-Bus Alpine changer, and even can fit some Ai-Net Alpine changers.

I've heard that the M-Bus cable may be present and tucked in up under the package shelf or under the trunk carpet if your car wasn't equipped.

However, AFAIK, the CD changer only came with the premium Harmon Kardon sound, and if so there is likely a lot of other harness unused. So it is possible it isn't there if you didn't have that option. I just don't know.

If you do a search here, there are a lot of posts about the Alpine head unit and CD changers. Also a Google for "Alpine BMW CD changer" or similar will find an article or two on which Alpine CD changers should be compatible up through the Ai-Net units.

I hear the only real advantage of the Ai-Net units is that they can play MPEG CDs, so you can have 100s more songs loaded.

Good luck!

Hi Al,
Thanks for the advise, I will go out and examine the package shelf area and down the sides of the tank. If I can't find it I'll take pictures of what I do find.

Regards, Chuck

Somebody gave you bad gouge, Al. Lots of non-premium-sound spec cars running round
with factory-fitted cd changers. Probably only a precious few where both head-unit and changer still function properly, although I'm happy to report mine does.... at least on most days.....

Ah, good to know

...should make the likelihood of finding that M-Bus cable even easier then.

Every Jaguar sedan I have seen from 1988 onward has the CD changer cable in the boot.

As stated it is either behind the carpet on the side or under the parcel shelf behind the fuel tank trim. It is usually folded and taped to another harness.
