Thumbs down Engine ECU Problems

I have had multiple issues with my Engine ECU getting wet and water seeping into the the connection. One of the prongs in the computer connection is broken... Now, my 1997 Jaguar Xj6 VDP just recently didn't start and i noticed that in the ECU. Can anyone help me with this issue?

Also, if i was to purchase a new computer, i notice that the codes vary depending on vehicle; is there a way to program a ECU to match mine?

Please help!

Thanks for any answers you may have

motorcarman (who is an extremely reliable source) has reported that the X-300 ecu is programmed by PROM chip replacement. I suppose, in theory, that you could move your proms to similiar series hardware, but I think yiou best find one with the same numbers,

Thanks for the help! Are you familiar with the re-programming of the ECU's?

The EPROMS in your ECM can be transfered. I don't know if the XJR is the same ECM so stick with the NA ECMs.

Thank you. One question for you since you seem to be very familiar with the ECU's. My ECU is LNB 1410 FD101, if i found one with the code LNB1410 FE101, what would that change? Do you know what the difference between the FD and FE is?

You would be good to go with the FE/101 part; that is a direct supersession for your original ECM. The /101 is the preprogrammed software level for your market [country] and application, so that needs to match.

After getting the correct ECM, I would fabricate a plastic "tent" to shed water around the ECM first, then I'd go hunting for the source of the ingress.

Cheers,

Andy Stodart a ex-Jaguar engineer, Northampton, United Kingdom states he can reprogram any 300x ECU - so I am getting that the basic units are the same except for the removable EPROMs which tell the unit what car is attached. I would also assume you could buy any unit and put your chips in - it should work properly.

This is a very common issue on both AJ16 X300's and AJ16 XJS's. I too had water in the black connector. And had a weak. corroded pin. Car would massively overfuel, misfire, etc. Got a rebuild ECU, and I made sure that the path of water has been sealed with silicone in the engine bay, and there is ton of dilectric grease all over the connectors. Especially behind the connectors, where the wires go out. That should keep water and moisture out for good. I still check on it periodically.

Appearantly, the old ECU.s can be fixed by simply fitting a new connector. I have not purchased my connector yet, but intend to do so to have a second working ECU, just in case :

Here is a very informative write up from a gentleman from England :

Jaguar XJ6; Jaguar X300; Jaguar XJ6 3.2 Sport; Engine Control Unit problems; ECU
