engine max rpm
Hi. Sorry to ask this odd question, but basically I need to know which is the lowest revving common engine in the cheaper Jaguars. Like the XJ40, X300 and X308. I think the AJ6 engine revs to about 6,000. Is there anything that is lower?
Thanks, Matt
Thanks, Matt
You can assume the V8 is higher on a under square engine , the AJ6 and AJ16 is over square . The stroke and piston size will give you that reference value .

What do you want to do with it, Matt?
The X300 6 cylinders seem to be redlined at 5500
A v12 is redlined at 6500; it is a derivative of the 60s race engine
I don’t know about the V8 - I would imagine, like Lady Penelope, the V8s are higher-revving
So if you want lowest revving, go inline 6

Hi. Thanks for your answers. To be honest I'm not sure we're going to do down the Jaguar route now anyway. To cut a very long story short I have a 6.5 GMC diesel engine sitting in my workshop. As engines go it is not the best idea, but it is in very good condition and it sounds amazing! So over the years I keep thinking of a vehicle to put it in, the obvious choice for me is a Land Rover (I'm very involved with Land Rovers with my business), but that's boring and the Tdi engines in Land Rovers are so good it seems daft to take a perfectly good engine out and make the vehicle worse! Same for the V8 engine that are in some Land Rovers, they're fine, so why go to the trouble. So, then I keep trying to think of a cheap-ish car I could look for preferably with a clapped-out engine so we could fit this daft diesel V8 to it. So I was think that a low revving vehicle would be best then the gearing is going to be acceptable. BUT, in hind sight I think an auto Jag petrol gearbox is just simply not going to be nice to drive. So it's back to the drawing board.
Something like a rusty old Morris Minor, or Rover P5B or something like that might be neat. But even ones that are in really poor condition are too good to ruin!
So, thanks for your replies.
Very best regards, Matt Savage

if youre looking for low-revving, go for an XJS (washes his mouth out..!), as it has the tallest diff ratio of the Jags - 2.88:1
the XJR6 is 3.27:1
N/A 4.0 is 3.58:1
3.2 is 3.77:1
(I am talking the X300 range here)

ahh, yes an XJS would be cool. And maybe not expensive. And if it was a really early one it would have a manual gearbox (?) and could be tax and MOT exempt!!! win win! Do these exist for under £1000?
Yes, we had thought about a BMW.

No. Neither they have a manual gearbox(well, very rare). For a £1000 you'd probably only buy a super rusty one, which would require a ton of body work.
Im sorry to interrupt, but maybe you should sell that diesel engine or put it in some jeep or truck, because ruining an all classic limousine with some nasty coal burner just sounds like some redneck engineering to me.
I can understand that people are modifying their Jaguars to be more quicker and stuff, but putting a greasy tractor motor in a classic car is ruining all thats prestige about the Jaguar. Imagine if you`re wearing a nice, bespoke suit together with some Converse`s (Yes, I know that the douchebag hipsters are doing that, but thats not the case).
I know, that the S Types, X types and other modern Jaguars are equipped with diesels, but they left the factory with that motor, not the greasemonkey`s shed. I`m sorry, if I may sound rude, but thats just the way I feel about this topic.

Hi. Yes, I don't disagree with you. There is no point ruining a perfectly good car. And like you say, something like a nice big old Jag was perfect when it came out of the factory.
My angle is that I have this daft engine here and I need to do something with it. If I came across an 'interesting' car with no engine that was cheap then it would be ideal.

As you mentioned before, that you`re working with Landrovers, I think that the diesel V8 would be perfect in some sort of all terrain truck. Low end torque and nice fuel consumption - whats no to like? Are blown engine Landies expensive in the UK?
Yeah, putting it into a Land Rover would be ideal and easier if it was a V8 already. But I need to find a Landy with a kaput engine. Because, like we've said, it's silly to take a perfectly good engine and put this daft thing in!!
