Default Erratic Tick Over

I've just bought a 1995 N-reg XJ6 3.2 auto, and I have a tick over problem. When I'm in drive it's about 800rpm, select N,R or P it shoots up to about 1200rpm. If any one could offer some advice if appreciate it. This is my first Jaguar and I have wanted one for so long.

Firstly welcome aboard.

Pleaae go to the "New members area" and do your intro.

The 3.2 in UK has an Idle Stepper Motor, or ICV (Idle Control Valve), and that is what controls the base idle and the loaded idle speed.

I would firstly be removing the large rubber intake bellows, and with a clean rag soaked in solvent (carby cleaner is fine), and wipe all the black goo out of the throttle body. Take your time, it is NOT a simple "wipe and go" fix. That stuff will be crusted in there.

Refit that bellows, making real sure it is seated 100% all the way around the throttle body snout.

Start it up, see if there is a change.

If its fine, sweet. If its not, then that ICV will need to come out and be cleaned. I have NEVER done mine, it works just fine. There is an art to it, and that will be well documented in the "stickies" at the top of the X300 section.

Others will come along with more suggestions as time zones kick in.

I dont think, HAHA, that the UK cars have an EGR system, we dont, but the USA cars do, and it reeks havoc.
