Handbrake questions.

Handbrake questions.
So i noticed today my handbrake is not working in 2 regards.
first being it does not hold the car still, hopefully just adjustment needed and not new shoes.
now where are the points of adjustment?
in the centre console area? near the rear wheels?
and also the light is not coming on the dash when the handle is engaged.
where is the switch/connection that may be responsible for this?
i know the globe is not blown as it comes on during the car startup phase.

The adjustment for the handbrake shoes is achieved through a hole in the brake disc, which will be visible with the wheel removed. It is near where the wheel studs come through the brake disc. You need to rotate the disc so that the hole is around the 12 oclock position, and then by shining a torch through the hole, locate the adjuster mechanism, which is a screw with a toothed head on it which sits horizontally running right to left. The teeth on the head allow it to be turned with a flat bladed screwdriver, altering the distance between the two brake shoes and achieving the required adjustment. Sounds simple, but very fiddly. In reality, the problem is often that the mechanism which converts the handbrake cables pulling action into a spreading action between the handbrake shoes, located at the bottom of the brake shoes, becomes stuck, with the result that most of the effort you apply with the handbrake goes into stretching the cable. Responds well to disassembly, cleaning and lubricating, but again, very fiddly.
I would be inclined to try to sort out the light first, in case something has gone awry at that end of the mechanism, as it will likely be more easily fixed.
Unless you are in the habit of using the handbrake to stop the car, there should be little if any wear on the shoes, although if you are not in the habit of using the handbrake, the general state of dust and dirt inside the brake disc may persuade you to change them. They are not expensive, but fiddly. Did I just say fiddly again?! Although I place my faith in Park, I always use my handbrake too, so that I don't have to do this job again for a long time

The first few minutes of this video outlines the procedure
To adjust how far you must pull on the hand lever to engage the hand brake, you need to adjust a cable underneath the car, that is right in front of the rear differential

still need to adjust the handbrake and make it tighter and function properly, but i cleaned the switch and got it working so the dash light works properly.
i had to soak it for about 4 hours in isopropyl alcohol to clean it up properly. must have been pretty dirty inside cus it was not making good contact.
but that is all fixed and working now.
