what goes wrong with an ignation coil ?? anyone cut it open to see ? Satterfield

Probably wire insulation breakdown from heat and high voltage most often.

 

I changed mine out about a month ago, just wondering if I could clean them or what,seems like a waste to chunk them, they were working,had been for a long time they are Lucus brand, Satterfield ,

 

The "mold" (that stuff that looks like hard wax) starts to break down opening up a path for either the primary, or secondary, coil to start arcing with the magnet which separates them. That high voltage arcing will eventually take out the portion of the coil which was previously unaffected. Generally, if the primary "upper" coil goes first, you'll experience sporadic hiccups before complete coil failure. If the secondary "lower" coil goes first, you'll experience an immediate, consistent miss on the affected cylinder.
