Insanely hot trunk/boot
97 VDP; trunk space gets incredibly hot; insanely so during hot weather.
Is this because of the location of the mufflers, or do I have some other bizarre Growler issue?
It can't be good for the battery; it certainly isn't for my drinks cooler!

The trunk of my '97 VDP also gets hot...hotter than any car trunk I know of! I did read another post some time back and consensus there was just as you mentioned; the location of the mufflers. If I recall correctly, the other poster was considering putting heat shrouds in the appropriate areas to help keep the trunk cooler. I never did hear any further about it.
Don't forget that there are vents in the floor of your boot/trunk, which have to be there for a reason. I can't say that my boot ever gets too warm, but then, that wouldn't be unusual here in Ireland.
Anyway, check that your vents are clear and unobstructed, it might help.

Now there's the thing; I've never been quite sure about the purpose of that grill in the floor. The trunk never has dust which makes me think that it's not vented to the outside.
Covering it doesn't seem to change the temperature any.
Admittedly we've had a few weeks in the 90's, but the trunk is still warm even when it's cooler outside.
A puzzle.

Thanks Mike & Graham; so my stylish kidnappee gets gassed and broiled .......nice!
So the floor vent mystery is solved; maybe someone can suggest how I can run the AC into das boot?

Funny, I actually thought the trunk was air-conditioned via that vent, as some later "luxury" cars do. I had no idea what that vent was for as I never really checked. So they are just for passive ventilation after all?
In later XJs that have the CD changer installed on the left of the trunk, there is only one vent on the right side floor. For the earlier XJs with the CD changer and amplifier up under the rear deck, there are two vents, one on each side of the trunk floor.

Lol, that's what I thought it was for as well, onetime I even cranked the AC and shut off all the interior vents to see if i could feel it blowing, obviously it didn't, so I wrote it off as another thing to fix..........at least I can take it off the list
