Hi bshambaugh,

Did the cloud emerge from the exhaust or the engine bay? Did it smell like oil or coolant or both?

Are the clanky noises from the engine bay, transmission, differential or suspension?

Any more specifics you can provide will help us help you.

Cheers,

Don

The smell was hard to describe. It smelled burnt and rubbery? it came out of the engine bay. Clanky noises come from the engine bay. The engine appears to vibrating unusually.

Thanks for your time.

Sounds like it is accessory related. Been a long time since I had my X300. Tensioner seizing, alternator, A/C comp, even air pump. Have somebody start the car while you look under the hood.

Sounds like the harmonic balancer has failed all right.

A friend said I should try starting the car up and recording the sound. They argued that I could not do much more damage than I already did since engines run at such a high RPM.

Is this wise?

Yes make sure there’s oil and water and start it up...

Place 3 paint strips on the main pulliys and verify the stripes come back aligned after engine run

The possible failed harmonic balancer will effect the water pump rotation and possibly the missing tooth on the ring gear effecting your spark timing by the crankshaft position sensor

The picture includes a " Andy Bracket " for the CKPS for better engine performance
