Default Radiator Panel Hex screw stripped.

I wanted to change the radiator bushings, so I soaked the hex screws with some WD40 and 4 hours later I tried to take them out. Well 3 of them did not want to come out and the the hex is now ruined.
I got a small kit from Home Depot to extract the screw but that didnt work and it didnt bite.

So I can either get another kit to remove the screws, or take it to the shop close to me and ask them to remove the screws in question.

I really wanted to do this task myself.

Any thoughts?

The bolt head must have a pilot hole drilled first

The short stubby easy outs are cheaper but in practice they don't stand up straight as you crank

The bolts can be quite rusted on the threads

In spraying with penetrate the oil gets under the head but not necessarily the rusted threads

You can drill the heads off to be able to get penetrate on the threads but I can't remember if the remaining shank is tall enough to extract with vice grips negating the meed for a easy out

You can source some replacement bolts from a later model V8 powered X308 at the salvage yard , the heads I think are different then the torque bits used on the X300

The torx screws (item 4) fixing the top radiator mounting panel (item 1)?

The are standard M8 torx screws and widely available. I'd get replacements and either drill them out or remove them with a stud extractor.

WD40 (Water Displacement 40) is not really a penetrating oil.
Please try a proper penetrating oil like KROIL or PB Blaster, Liquid Wrench etc.

I would use 'anti-seize' when reinstalling bolts when you get this sorted.

G'day Tbilsi,

If you can't get the rusted bolts out you might have to drill them out and use a Helicoil https://helicoil.in/ to repair the damaged threads.

Cheers,
Jeff.

Thank you all. Its two in front of the radiator and one main on on the side.

Even if half of them go back for the time being I think the radiator will be held in place just fine. Gonna get the screw extractor tool today. Will post results as the day goes.

They’re all torx. I stripped one thread on removal but never the head, be careful.

Had the shop take out the stripped hex screws with ease. The rest I did myself, changed the bushings.
Car is like new now.
