Just Bought An XJ6
Hello all
Just picked up '96 XJ6. I wasn't even looking for one but it seemed to be too good of a deal to pass up - 37,000 miles former senior citizen's in near mint shape for $5000. That is a good deal, right? It's gold with tan interior.
Only problem is a slight steering wiggle at freeway speeds. One of the wheels has some decent curb rash and no weights on it so I figure that's probably the problem. Also, the front and rear tires are mismatched.
Are there any particular things I should do right away?
It's sharing a garage with my Miata. Quite a difference...
Thanks!

Sounds like a GREAT deal! Good luck.
If it seems to be running fine, I'd just check out the tires, and replace as needed. Get a good balance and maybe an alignment. Then drive it for a bit and make a mental (or actual) list of what you notice.
Then do some searches here, and if no good results, post a question. There are a lot of folks here very willing to help.
I too am a new owner, just picking up a 41k 97XJR and the pre and post purchase advice has been very excellent.

Right now I am looking for a nice burl wood shift knob for it. Preferably without an emblem of any kind.
I'm also looking for a wood/leather steering wheel out of an XJR with matching wood. Is that possible or do all XJR's use the beechwood and not burled walnut?
Looking to upgrade the headlights to European E-Codes. Would love any advice on that front.
Lastly, I ordered a full set of some really nice Pirelli tires today from Tirerack. They should be here tomorrow. I'll have them on the car tomorrow afternoon, balanced on a Hunter Road Force balancer.
Here are the tires:

Final step will be to make sure she has a nice bath, clay bar and 2 coats of wax this weekend.

Craighead, I also own a 97 British Racing Green XJ6 and a Brilliant Black Supercharge 1993 Miata. I would recommend refresh the rear end with new oil. Replace transmission oil and internal filter.
You can get tires from Costco, Sams Club or local discount tire direct. The benefit buying from these three stores are life time tires rotation and balance.

I already bought my tires. They are getting mounted tomorrow morning.
I am going in next week to have the tranny and diff fluid changed. I was planning on going with Redline Oil. Anyone else use Redline in the transmission and diff?

Depending on the year and exterior color, some XJRs came with the lighter wood interior. For those with the regular lighter XJ interior, it appears they received the standard XJ wheel with the light wood and light colored leather airbag cover with the growler instead of XJR embossed black leather.
So yes, you could fit an XJR wheel, but it will be black leather with the dark wood.
AFAIK there aren't any XJR embossed wheels in a lighter color, but that's not to say it never existed as I don't know for certain, esp in other markets.

I bought my when it only had 32k miles. it developed whining noise from the rear end. I was driven fine except for the annoying noise. My Jaguar Master Mechanic brother told me the some X300 ran into this issue due to of lack of maintenance, leak or low oil. Lucky enough , I found an entire rear end with differential and all for sale locally for $250.00. and replace myself with the help of a friend. I recalled Jaguar dealer wanted around $3K to replace.

UPDATE:
I'm going to be changing the rear diff fluid tomorrow.
My power steering was leaking but it turns out it's just leaking from the hose that goes to the reservoir(top). It's leaking and running down the hose and dripping below onto other hoses but luckily it's an easy(cheap) fix!
This is a $30 hose brand new but I don't see any reason why I couldn't just use some cut-to-fix hose from an auto parts store. Please do chime in if I'm wrong.
Beyond that, I am going to take it to "Harry's Jaguar" in Redondo Beach, CA to have the transmission fluid and coolant changed. I would do it myself but disposing of all that fluid would just be too much of a pain.
