Default new oil pan, really ??

for crap's sake... got all the maintenance records for my car today. noticed on the 60,000 mile scheduled service that the staff made a note saying 'needs new oil pan, estimate $2,200'. however, what seems odd is that under the 60k mile service they have a charge of $469 in parts and $920 in labor. is that normal for a scheduled service ?? $1,600 seems awfully steep for typical maintenance, then again, it's my first cat so maybe that's not too far off base?

i suppose all i can do is try to get ahold of the shop to see if it indeed has been replaced, but it doesn't seem like the last owner to let something like that slide. she literally had it in there about every 2-3k miles for anything from 'a louder engine noise' to 'a clunking noise' that the techs were unable to duplicate so ...

I must say, if you've paid the shop $1500 and are not sure of what was or wasn't done, they've done a poor job of customer service. They should take a few minutes and explain the work and the billing when you pick up the car! Just my two cents on that....

The 60k service is usually a biggie so I'm not surprised at the big bill. It's hard to comment more on that without a breakdown of what was actually done.

Ask them WHY they are recommending a new oil pan (another thing that should've been explained) and we'll go from there. Most commonly an oil pan is replaced because of physical damage....and most certainly not done routine/scheduled service item.

Cheers

right. wow, i'm an idiot and totally forgot to say i got the service records of the **previous** owners... they did the 60k checkup and that's when 'new oil pan needed' was mentioned on the record. and another biggie, this was in may of 2005. i called the dealership/shop where it has been serviced it's whole life and they certainly remember the car.

while they don't have a record of the dealership fixing it, i'm convinced a couple that would have spent $700 to install the 6-disc in the trunk would have fixed a leaky oil pan. so yeah, just being paranoid.

on the upside to this whole deal i now know i have a newer fuel pump and o2 sensors in the car .
