Had my Jaguar Sovereign resprayed and replaced all the chrome with new when they resprayed the car back in 2007
Put the card straight from the paintshop in to the garage pulled it out this weekend for the first time and really upset to see all the chrome on the bumpers pitted
have tried metal polish but not working that well
so can you still buy these front and rear bumper chromes new ? also need a new boot chrome plastic trim where the boot release switch is, that was also replaced but no pitted
can't believe the car has not been on the road and there is so much damage to the chrome !
also would like to replace the four passenger door windows with new as there are some scratches ? what is the best way to do this, should I go to companies like auto glass or can these be sourced in other ways
now the car is out of the garage, would like to get a car cover, what is the best type / cover to purchase
Wait, are you saying you had a full respray and new bumpers and then put the car in storage for 13 years? That's unusual. If that's right you may have a bit more re-commissioning to be worried about than the bumpers.
The bumper chrome on the X300 is not actually chrome. It's polished stainless steel. I've never seen any that are pitted. Can you post some pics?
Some bumper components are available new but not all. And they're very expensive. The rear centre blade alone is about £700.
I am going to guess that you are in the UK.
Your best bet is Ebay, I am sure you will get the glass and bumper chrome you need for a fraction of the new price.
I am aware of a 97 [ P ] plate exec being broken in the midlands, I have bought a few bits from the seller and he seems fair.
I can make contact with him if you want me to.
John.
Yes the car has been in storage for 13 Years and not out the garage until this weekend,
The car looked a mess with dirt, dust muck etc and was one of the reasons I kept putting the job off,
When I drove the car in to the garage from the paint shop it looked almost showroom condition.
The car is very special to me as it was a final present to me from my Father before has passed away in 2002
Many things at the time of the respray were replaced from new, Bumper Stainless Blades Front Rear / Boot Chrome / Jaguar & Soverign Chrome Badges / Chrome Rear Lights etc
To my amazement every bit of chrome / stainless is pitted even though its been garaged ???
I appreciated all you help and advice but not really interested in buying 2nd hand parts only looking for new, as most 2nd hand parts are in worst condition than I am taking of the car.
I know I am going to need new oil filter / oil change, need to change the fuel,
Need to drop oil down the pots and hand crank the engine, It was pushed out the garage
Will need new tires and battery etc.
Just trying to cosmetically bring the car back up to showroom condition
any other help and advice will be very much appreciated, getting new pristine parts for these cars is becoming a real mare
will get some photos of the pitting
Even though I have put this job off taking the car out, cleaning and polishing it over the weekend gave me a lot of satisfaction, I love this car, just want to get it back on the road again in showroom condition
John,
I hear what you are saying about wanting to use new rather than second hand, but as b1mcp said earlier, the bumpers arent chromed, they are solid stainless steel. The finish on them is achieved by polishing, and in normal use, simple washing should keep them in good condition. Obviously yours have deteriorated during storage, but the finish should be capable of being reinstated by polishing, perhaps professionally if the marking is very heavy.
All of this assumes that your XJ6 is an X300 model of course, as predecessors were chrome..........
I think part of the problem is the concrete garage, many cars have been lost after long term storage in one.
Keep in mind dealer showrooms are temperature controlled all year round, to keep a car in showroom condition you must match showroom conditions.
I think the car looks very nice, I would be pleased that it does not look a lot worse.
I hope you get it back on the road and drive it with a lot of pride and a big smile on your face.
John
Well, it is definitely an X300, and that definitely looks like pitting!
Unlike chrome, where the pitting usually represents holes in the layer of chrome, through to the nickel or steel below, these bumpers are solid stainless, so there is something to polish down to without compromising the finish. Autosol hasnt done the trick, but there are various metal polishing attachments for an electric drill which could sort this. The discs are almost like thick canvas and with a little compound on them should shift the marks on your bumpers.
That is a lovely P6. Very unusual to see one with the correct factory accessory rear head restraints. Lovely colour trim combination. I am wondering whether the rear badge has been replaced at some point, as should it not say 2000 TC?
Does she have the box pleat seats or the earlier, and better quality "flat" seat faces? A real gem, and fantastically low mileage.
Have spoken with a metallurgist regarding the damage and they think it may have happened at the time of respray when I delivered all the new stainless steel parts back in 2007 to the paint shop, they were doing lots of grinding and sanding
so hot iron filling may have damaged the new parts before they were fitted!
Good to know the stainless steep can be re-polished I may remove the blades and have them re-polished professionally
Regarding Rover, I think the badge is original as this is not a twin carb version, but she is stunning and who ever ends up with this baby will own a beautiful example of a P6 Rover
It is interesting that your Rover isn’t a TC, as the bumper over riders and dashboard with the matching speedo and rev counter were only fitted to TC models as far as I know.
the humidity got to it, I live in northern ohio,USA. lot of humidity in summer and winter is no joy ether as I have a lot of old mopars from the 60's with a lot of chrome. it needs to be polished and waxed at least every two years or fine black pits will appear an detroy the chrome. best advice is replace chrome and keep in climate controlled storeage
