Newbee - Please help
Hi Everyone.
I'm new here so please be gentle with me lol.
Firstly I want to make sure I'm in the right section. I
believe I have a XK300 (I have a 1996 XJ Executive
3.2litre). So if I'm in the right place then that's a result
to start off with lol. If I'm not maybe a nice administrator
can move this post.
Right then here is the main point of my message. I have a
few problems with the Jag (yeah I'm still trying to think of
a name for her) that I'm hoping you guys can give me advice
on. I'll try and list them in the order of the importance,
but please forgive me if I don't get them the right way
around.
I suppose that I should state at this point my details. I
love cars, but I'm not a mechanic by any stretch. I believe
I have a logical mind but my mechanical ability is limited.
1) ABS - The ABS light on the left hand side of the
dashboard is not illuminated when I start the car but within
about 1-2mins after I've driven then car it will illuminate
and not go out until I turn the car off again. I haven't
looked into the actual circumstances of why it comes on ie
if it's when I turn the wheel or get over a certain speed
etc. I've been given a little bit of advice on this, but I
don't want to lead anyone down the wrong path so I'll just
leave it there lol.
2) AIRBAG - The airbag light on the right hand side of the
dashboard is illuminated as soon as I turn on the car on and
remains on until I turn the car off. Airbag is also
displayed on the Odometer/Trip Computer display and can be
removed by pressing the 'ODO' button.
3) PETROL - The filler flap doesn't appear to lock. I've
looked in the manual and I believe that my filler flap has a
bracket missing. It appears that there should be a bracket
that would lock against the silver pin. So do I just need to
get a bracket or is my system different to the manual? Also
the manual shows a pull cord within the boot which mine
doesn’t appear to have.
4) RADIO - It doesn't work. There are no lights on it at all
and it doesn't work the aerial. It's not even like the radio
comes on and says code or anything.
5) AERIAL - It doesn't work, but might be linked to 4)
above.
6) CLOCK - The background light comes on, but the time isn't
displayed. If I press on the display only one of the
sections of a number appears and then disappears again when
I release the display.
7) SWICH ILLUMINATION - At night I've noticed that a few of
the switches are not illuminated. These are a) drivers door
window controls, but only the two on the left hand side ie
nearside windows b) The right hand side of the climate
controls ie A/C, AUTO and manual distribution buttons and
right hand side of the temp display is a bit dim.
8) HEADLINING - The headlining has drooped a bit in places.
Anything I can do about this?
9) WHEELS - They are a bit of a mess. Anyone recommend a
place that can make them look like new?
I thank you in advance for your comments and the time it's
taken you to read this.

Should really read chassis codes and find out what is wrong, but if you insist on jumping in uninformed, it has all the markings of this common failure:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...c-fault-44272/
Clock:
ModuleMaster | Services | Clock Modules
Headliner:
1998 Jaguar XJ8 headliner removal, recovering and replacement instructions.
Search on "Illumination" in this forum for lots of hits...and your problem sounds more like you are in need of some bulb renewal....but inasmuch as you'll be fiddling with the radio head anyway..may as well check this earth connection on the back of it (fwd edge, as installed):
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...witches-53109/
Naturally, you'll want to check all fuse panels for failures, but beyond that, your radio/aerial and airbag faults I can't begin to guess on...but search is your friend...if it is a common failure..it'll be commented on within.....enjoy!
Oops! btw...welcome to the forum! make sure you stop by the new member section and introduce yourself.

Welcome to the forum, you are in the right place, 95-97 XJ6 is called the X300
1. I would check and clean the wheel speed sensors
3. I believe you are correct about that bracket
4. The original alpine unit is not the most reliable, install a decent aftermarket one. You can get the harness that you need here Car Audio Systems, Car Stereo, In Car Audio Stereo, Car Speakers Amplifiers Stereo Head Unit
5. Possibly because the radio wont turn on but its also a known weak point, personally Ive jammed mine in the up position on my xj40 and x300
6. Another known failure, I've heard theres a company called master modules that can fix them
8. Not all that uncommon in these unfortunately, check this out https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...eadliner-3958/
good luck with the Jag

Backlights
Everything useful is in the first post.
Drivers door backlights are really easy to replace, as long as 'mirror' isn't blown. Climate controls, not so easy. I recommend doing the LED overhaul, but I admit that it was no picnic.

How fussy are you with regard to the sagging headliner?
Some folk say that only perfect is good enough and other folk say that if it looks OK then it'll do.
If you are one of the latter, or somebody even half-way between the two, here's something of my own that you could try. You will need a sharp knife, some sticky stuff, a stick to spread the sticky stuff, a mop handle, 2 x face towels and a length of wood measuring 12" x 3" x 1/2".
Method ... Find the bit where the headliner is drooping the most. Use the knife to make a slit in the material about 12" long and from side to side of the car. Use the stick to spread the sticky stuff around on either side of the slit that you just made. Then fold one towel a couple of times and put it on the seat under the slit that you just made. Fold the other towel and put it on the small plank to end up between the plank and the headliner. Now comes the tricky bit. Cut the mop handle to size such that when it is placed between the plank and the first towel it holds the plank securely in place.
When the sticky stuff dries and that bit of headliner is sorted, only you will be able to decide if you need to repeat the process in another section.
The idea may not be perfect but it was the best I could come up with in 2 minutes, lol.

for "sticky stuff" use a spray adhesive. No need to prop it up with a mop handle, spray both surfaces, wait a minute or two, smooth it out with your hands. But, usually the foam has deteriorated too much, and you'll get lumps of foam crumbs showing through the material.

Hi Everyone
Thank you for your responses. Some great information in there.
I have read the Jaguar Electrical Diagnostic Manual (cover 3) on the ABS System and I believe I have the following fault.
Fault Indication:
ABS MIL lamp illuminates at 20 kph.
Note: It is likely that the TC MIL lamp and Traction OFF lamp will also illuminate on vehicles with traction control fitted
Possible Causes
Fuses blown.
Faulty hydraulic module pump / motor unit or circuitry.
Faulty ABS / TC CM.
Fault Diagnosis
Check fuses.
Disconnect pump / motor unit and measure resistance across two pin connector. Measured value should be in the region of 0.852. Renew unit if excessive resistance or short circuit is recorded.
Unbolt 28-way connector from ABS /TC CM and measure voltage between harness connections 1 and 14. If value is not approximately equal to battery volts renew harness.
Renew ABS 1 TC CM if fault is not located during the above procedures.
The problem is I don’t want to go about resolving the above fault if this isn’t actually my problem. I will still have the Airbag problem too. I have made contact with my local garages and they don’t have the diagnostic software. The nearest Jaguar garage want to change me £67 to undertake diagnostic testing. I’ve been told that Jaguar owners are very friendly and helpful and I was wondering if there is anyone in my local area has the software and would check these problems out for me. My car is currently in North Oxfordshire.
I look forward to your responses lol.

I'm not sure what it is that you need.
I'm a new Jag owner myself and I bought one of those Code checking gizmos on eBay. It's the one where you stick one end of a wire into a socket under the dash (to the left of the steering column) and the other end into a laptop. With the laptop and Jag both running, you get info about any error codes and what they mean. I haven't actually used it myself yet, can you tell? lol. There is a CD that came with it from eBay that you need to have running on the laptop (Windows only).
Is that the software that you need?
I am in Lancashire but postage only takes a day or so.

Hi Steve
Thank you for your reply. I'm after borrowing a scanner and software. Thank you for your kind offer regarding lending me the software, but obviously I don't expect you to post/lend me the scanner as well. Maybe I'll have a search on the old threads here for scanner buying advice. Did you look at any threads on there before deciding on which on to buy?
Anybody else know what type is the best for me to buy? Or anybody have a scanner and software that I could come and borrow?
Thanks

Many choices, from mild to wild, so to speak.
For basic DIY/home use diagnosis of engine managment codes I've been happy with my Innova 3130. Scans/clears codes, has live data stream of basic engine management systems. Won't read body codes, won't calibrate sensors, etc.
It was only about $125 several years ago. Probably less nowadays. Heh heh...I keep it the car as there always seems to be a friend or family member needing help.
Others will chime in.
Cheers
DD
Spencer,
If you want to read chassis codes, (from your suspicions listed above - you are looking to confirm a C1095, I think) your choices are considerably more limited. I believe Auto Enginuity with a Jag=specific option is about all that is out there unless you want to find/rebuild a WDS - the older jag-specific equipment that the dealers used. Motorcarman and others aboard here can help you with that, but I believe either way you are looking at the equivalent of $500 US.
Powertrain codes - an entirely different matter: you can find reliable equipment all day long for <$50 that will do that. Personally, I'm using and quite happy with a bluetooth OBDII adapter from Amazon and the $5 Droid App "Torque"

Regarding item #3, the fuel door...There is a pin within the top of the fender, inside the filler opening. The pin retracts into the fender when the doors are unlocked. Look where the bracket mates with the fender. Try applying WD40, or similar penetrating fluid to the pin, then lubricate. As for the pull cord, it is waaay up inside the boot, very short, and I believe has a black tag on it.
Hi Guys
Right then here is an update.
I’ve had my codes read, for problem 1. ABS and 2. Airbag, and after 2hrs they said they could only find fault C1095 for the ABS, but couldn’t get any were with the Airbag. They said I should bring it back when I could leave it for a period of time rather than sitting around waiting for it and they would investigate the Airbag further.
So here is my problem, we all know that C1095 is as below, but do I A) buy a second hand pump motor and have my mechanic replace that if so where do I get one from or do I B) follow the advice on thread https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...c-fault-44272/ and get my mechanic to cut open my ABS TC CM and undertake this procedure Teves MkIV ABS Repair.pdf any thoughts?
DTC C1095
Fault description Pump motor failure
Monitoring conditions Drive vehicle > 12.5 mph (20 km/h)
ABS MIL Yes
Default action System switches off
Possible causes Pump motor to cm circuit: high resistance, open circuit or short circuit to ground or B+ voltage Pump motor failure
Also what would you suggest regarding the Airbag? Do I book it in for another appointment or just get my mechanic to investigate this further? For the record cause they couldn’t find any problems with the airbag they never charged me for the diagnostic.
Your help would be appreciated. Obviously I want to get these two main faults resolved before I look at the other minor problems.
