Default No brake lights wtf

Ok trying to get this car to register status and slowly getting there I got the plugs changed an coil pacs changed and it runs great and smooth. Got the other small issues taken care of went to have it inspected and found out that I have no stop lights none. I was surprised lol, I gt it home checked the fuse, good, relays, good, bulbs, good, only thing left that I know if is the brake switch which I will be trying tomorrow I ordered a new one from jag an overnighted it. But was wondering if theres anything else I should be looking for? I read about a BFU brake failure unit but I read it on a post where doug responded to it, I think it was an 87 xj6 though. I looked for this mysterious sounding relay thing and couldnt find any relay on the back with a purple and green wire. If I do have one which would it be an where is it located. Thanks guys

It's probably the switch...somewhat common failure point on these cars...so don't knock yerself out looking for other problems just yet.

Unlike the older XJs, the bulb failure function on X300s is handled by a solid state module of some kind...I think. I've never delved into it so I can't say for sure....but I sure it's nothin' like the the old ones.

Back to the stop light switch......

It's up there on the brake pedal in a little tin housing. You'll see it. A little fussy to replace but not actually difficult. If yours is the original older style you'll need an adpater harness as the replacement switch is an updated design. The adapter harness is stupid expensive....you could probably make something up on your own with a little patience.

Now that I've written all that......

Something just dawned on me.....

Does it shift out of park?? The gearshift release is tied in with the brake light switch so if the gearshift release is OK you may indeed have a problem elsewhere.

Good luck
DD

If it shifts out of park, do you hear a click or sound when you step on the brake? The sound is the lock mechanism on the shifter. If you do then than would mean your brake switch is in fact working and you should look else where for your brake light failure. If you don't hear a sound, that could mean that the shifter lock is broken or removed and replacing the the switch should solve your problem.

I had the same problem in my XJR and as indicated by Doug it was the switch at the brake pedal. A bit of a pain changing it over but not expensive. Doug described its position accuratly

Well guys tried the switch and it didnt help when I tried my stock one it worked fine replacing it didnt change the fact that I have no brake lights. I then tried switching the bulb computer thing in the back by the fuse box and it too did nothing Im at a total loss switch good, bulbs good, I think relay is good, fuse good if I checked the right one under the pass rear seat. I do have a wire in the truck area that has a single connection but its not going anywhere kinda weird anyone know where this goes??

Very possible.

The failure mode I experienced was having to stab the pedal several times before the brake lights would work.

Cheers
