Default Oil Drain Plug specs anyone??

hi, my oil pan is starting to strip, and I am either going to have to retap my oil pan, or change it out. I would rather tap it out, does anyone know the exact specs on the stock oem drain plug on the 96 xj6? I know its a 20mm, but I need the exact specs with length and width and all. I wanna know if I should go with a larger drain plug, but my mechanic says to find out the specs first. If anyone can help, I would gladly appriciate it, thanks

20mm X 2.5 is the thread size. You can get a rethread kit but it is a bit 'pricey' and you have to get the hole and threads perpendicular to the sealing face of the pan or the drain plug will be crooked and leak.

I have done this repair several times and I usually have to remove the gearbox dipstick tube for access.

There are TIMESERTS, RECOIL and HELICOIL etc. kits with the drill bit and inserts. I think the ones I used were HELICOIL but I don't remember.

I think you need to find a second hand (used) sump from a breaker (salvage yard) to avoid a thread repair.

This is pretty cool, I did not realize that a rethread kit was available.

It's very interesting also the regional colloquialisms.

2nd hand seems to be a phrase used on both sides of the pond.

2p = 2pence = 2c = 2cents.

Breaker is what us yanks call a junkyard/salvage yard/used parts dealer etc...

Throw in boot, bonnet, lorry and glove and a yank could get really lost. And if you are from the southern US, as I am, don't be offended. It's my understanding that we all come under the heading of Yank to the Brits. Personally I'm a hillbilly.

It's cool to come here and learn about jags and linguistics at the same time.

I have used Helicoil in the past (not in this application) and their kit is very high quality, and worked flawlessly though a bit pricey
