oil pressure gauge
can any-one tell me why my gauge just dropped to zero pressure and the oil light came on,but the oil was full and the motor didn,t heat up so I kept going and after 100 miles the gauge came back to normal pressure. It did this 3 times over 200 miles. The engine never made any noises or dropped power at all...Thx Jamie

My x300 is doing some thing simular the gauge just keeps going up and down from cold but some times sticks at 4 like it should for a while so would you say i have the same problem with the sender unit?? Also is it the same sender for the gauge and the warning light? as on the odd times the light has come on to??

the gauge measures the pressure and flow of the oil circulating within the engine system, if the gauges and sending unit are in proper working condition then it is necessary to check the flow system, there might be some restrictions either on the oil filter, oil tube and or oil pump this is a serious and a sign/clue to clean the system, it can cause premature wear on the engines internal component.

check the pressure with a wet gauge to verify correct oil pressure, and this will definitely indicate a faulty sending unit. The sending unit on my '95 XJR had gone completely bad, and the gauge on the dash is pegged on high all the time. The results I got when I did the test were at about 55 psi on cold start and around 30-35 psi when the engine warmed up, which is normal. not sure if it's the same on the supercharged engines, but I hope this helps.

On a 95 XJ6 I had, A Jaguar service rep told me that Jaguars do not have an oil pressure problem, but oil pressure sensors do fail. They replaced mine with one of Ford's "better Ideas". It's a sender that turns your gauge into an idiot gauge. As soon as the engine starts and you have oil pressure it shows about 40-45 psi and never moves from that. I did not even get out of the dealer parking before I discovered that they replaced my oil pressure sensor with a sender. I hit up the service rep about that and he stated Jaguar no longer services sensors because of the failure rate. That's the type of sender that my old 69 Ford pickup had.
