I'm very puzzled
I had posted a thread months and months ago that I think even some of the Jag Techs on here answered for me. I always wanted to know if the 1998-2003 headlights were interchangeable with the 95-97 models. Theyre so ugly compared to the sharper more clear ones seen on the 98-03 models. Plus, they have the inner headlights with the dim light, not the outsides, which I personally thinks pretty dumb!
Came across this 1997 XJR tonight and have seen no other 97 XJ6 or XJR with the upgraded headlights ever. So it MUST be able to be done! I emailed the guy to see exactly what he did. It looks a thousand times better and will be the FIRST thing I do if its possible when I get mine in a month or so! = )
Below is the pics. First is the 1997 XJR I found tonight, 2nd is a regular XJ6 with the lights on. You can see the huge difference. And the third is a 200 XJR my dad leased a few years back with the EXACT look I want for the front. Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated on this little riddle!!

dim lights are usually on the ouside and the bright beam on the inside, that is the standard in all brands of vehicle manufactured in this world, the one you saw with the opposite orientation of the head lights might be altered and does not conform to any original car manufacturing specification.

i'd agree in most cases. But the picture of my father's silver 2000 XJR above is factory headlights. And that's what the lights look like on the 1998-2003 XJ models. That picture represents the lights being turned half on (parking lights, inner dim glow) and with the lights half on you can also turn fog lights on like in that above picture. If the high beams were on they'd be the outside like they were on our 2000 XJR. I just was trying to verify how hard the conversion would be to the older 1995-1997 X300s with the lights you describe...outside dimmer, inner highbeams, which is correct because that's how those ones are set up.
There wasnt anything modified on the 2000 XJR we had to make the lights look like that. Ive seen many others from that 98-03 bracket years rolling around in my area with that exact look.

The riddle has kept me puzzled for a while. I have a 1995 XJ6, and its time to get creative, as far as headlights and looks are concerned. I have HUGE plans and when I'm done, this Jag will be one of a kind, the only one like it in this world. Cant disclose the details now, but as soon as I have the funds, resources and time, I'll get the project done, and document it step by step, post it on here for anyone who would like to do the same. Cheers!

even on the current models it is not suppose to be that way, I would suggest you ahve the Jag check out with a certified electrician, even in the JTIS it comes out as a standard to have the main beam on the outside and the high beam on the inside. (No matter what year model and no matter which region the car came from. I strongly believe it was altered.

awesome. thanks for the info guys. That will most definitely be the FIRST thing I do to my XJR when I get it just to give it a slightly more modern look. My friend has a 2003 Escape with the "foggy" looking headlights versus the newer clear style ones from 2005 and up. He's an electrician and had to reconfigure everything but he made the upgrade work. His truck looks 10x better now!

lol. it's OK. It does seem like there wasn't a solid answer given. But BRUTAL definitely hit the nail on the head. It is doable. I think if I or others were to do it the lights would probably just need to be slightly modified as far as wiring maybe. That's what I got out of this so far. The picture I found as well as the sig pic in BRUTAL's definitely is proof that it can be done though! = )
