Default rear axle binding

recently replaced the rear diff and noticed both my stub shafts felt rough compared the old one, made a slight clicking when turned by hand and much louder when given power. is this normally a worn spline on the carrier/shaft or possibly bearing related?

On the video it sounds like the noise is coming from the hub rather than the diff. Also sounds quite "light" although I guess everything is unloaded. It coundnt be something catching on the reluctor ring? I know how difficult it is to capture sound accurately on video so this could be way off.

On the ground there’s no nothing of note other than a very light whine at 35-40. When turning it over by hand I can hear the clicking coming from the output stub shafts. When the diff was out of the car it made a light clicking noise when turning the shafts.

Your second video certainly makes it clearer that the sound is from the diff. At the risk of asking a silly question, the diff does have oil in it?

I agree with the oil ask, I have forgotten in the past, so take NO offence please.

BUT

When was the last time the halfshaft joints were greased, its got sort of sound to it also.

I wondered about the halfshaft joints too Grant. What put me off was the fact that the sound seems so directly related to the rotational speed. The halfshaft bearings are oscillating and I think the whole shaft would need to be rotating faster for them to produce that amount of noise. Second video makes it sound very like teeth meshing.

Yep.

Just that I have that similar noise with the older Series cars, and since there are 4 bearings per joint, it can get weird to the ears. Greasing those joints has shut a many Jag up in my time, and sadly, they are a forgotten service item on the later cars.

I would spend the 10 minutes and grease the 4 of them, and see if anything changes, before digging into the depths again.

oil is in the diff.

somebody replaced the halfshaft joints with non greaseable units. they rotated fine when they were off the car. i might just pull the hub and rebuild the wheel bearings pivot bearings UJs and output shafts.
