Default Shift Knob

How do I remove my Shift knob on my x300 1996?.. I'm twisting both directions and nothing is happening. I'm guessing I got to twist the black shaft? I want to get a sweet wood grain knob

Yup, gotta loosen the lock nut first, then the shift knob should come off pretty easily. As for the wood shift knob, I was thinking of replacing my tan one with a wood grain one, but then realized the grain wouldn't match the rest of the wood in the console, so I replaced it with a black leather one instead. I'm quite happy with the black leather knob. I'm sure the non-matching wood grain one would've driven my first-born, attention-to-detail, OCD-brain insane, lol!

Default New one?

Just out of curiousity, are you replacing the shifter knob, or just dismantling the console?

I ask because eBay has some nice ones like this one I'm contemplating for my XJR:

I just want to replace the shifter Knob, I want to get a nice Burl Walnut Woodgrain or maybe an all black one with the Jag logo. I'm still confused about the Lock nut, since I have never done this before. Where is that located? Do i have to take apart the trim bezel around the shift and get under the ski slope? Maybe someone can post a picture with minimal photoshop skills? lol.

Thanks for the replies all.

Here ya go.

JD all round me thinks.

ENJOY

NO dissmantling anything required, a shifter spanner on the flats, turn the nut towards the console, and the knob towards the roof. Refit is reverse of removal.

Thanks Shaune for posting that example. Am in the process of ordering one that I didn't previously know I needed until I saw that beauty!
I have swapped mine between XKR and X300, and inadvertantly wrecked my original leather knob applying brute force! The lock nut is not immediately obvious looking from above, but it is shown clearly in Grant's diagram.
It's the tapered metal bezel immediately below the knob, and if you look carefully there are 2 flat surfaces, 1 on either side at the widest part of this. (at the top). You can get a crescent onto this and loosen the nut, and the knob screws off easily. I discovered this too late for my poor old leather original. But no lovely burl walnut knobs were harmed because of this!

Thanks for the replies. I feel like the original leather knob wasn't doing the interior justice.

You're welcome, Phil.

I also didn't know I need a new shift knob until I saw that one on eBay. The price seems reasonable, too. If it wasn't for my job I don't think I would have had the time to sift through all the parts & accessories available for my car.

Default Christmas Gift

Thought I'd share this with previous posters. My wife decided to look in my eBay favourites for Christmas gift ideas.
Happy to say she bought me the shift knob I posted above. Here is pics of the actual knob.

i bought one on ebay for about $40 and it is a china special.
the foil ring all around the top came lose the first day and looked like crap. the rest of the knob seemed allright and i kept it as i did not want to go through the pain of a return etc. so i put it on the lathe and removed all the foil and the glue and then i rolled into the groove a viton "O" ring which goes well with the brown wood.
bottom line if i knew how bad they are i would not have bought it

Exactly. As you mentioned, mine was bought here in Canada. The gentleman
that does these is located in Quebec to be more specific.

Here is the link to his eBay store:

There is a burlwood cigar lighter on eBay, too that looks nice, however, that may be pushing it too much;
