Replaced the CTS and took the MAF off and sprayed it liberally with contact cleaner then left it to dry overnight.
Refitted it and went for a shortish including a bit of max pedal once up to temperature; ran fine although still ticking over at about 1000rpm..
Took it for a longer run the next day and everything back to normal so I don't know if it is actually fixed or not.
have got hold of a used TPS and will look for CPS to keep it company.

I'm also using a aftermarket MAF from eBay successfully. It was about 1/14 the cost of a NOS genuine item. It was sold under this description: RANGE ROVER MK2 3.9 4.0 4.6 DISCOVERY 2 4.0 MASS AIR FLOW METER SENSOR ERR5595A
I haven't worried about re-orienting as it fits fine.
