The speedo comes off the left rear wheel speed sensor . Remove and clean with caution as they break easily . Do you have a ABS / TC fail light ?

You can do this without jacking the car and spray the 8 or 10 mm bolt and the through boss a couple of days in advance if it doesn't come off easily

Lady P is right about the source of the signal for the speedo, but if the wheel sensor was the problem, you would definitely have the ABS/TRAC fail light too. So if you dont have the light as well, you need to look elsewhere for the speedo fault. Removal of the instrument binnacle is pretty straightforward, and would enable you to check the two ribbon cable attachments to it at the same time.

There are some instrument cluster fuses and 4 connectors to look at first as you will not carry your mileage over

See page 96
