Unhappy Starter motor

Well it seems I will have ro remove the starter motor on my XJR I tried cleaning the elictrical connections but still having problems with bendix working correctly so. How do you get to the upper bolt of the starter, the lower one seems easy but I can;t even see the upper one.

Any help please...

Here's a previous post I made about an NA car.
'Well.....I've removed the throttle body, the inlet manifold, the abs pump, the coolant and heater hoses and heater pump, the cylinder head, the centre console, and....I still can't get that bolt out. I think I'll cut through the transmission tunnel/bulkhead rather than drop the transmission/pull the engine block.
Seriously, it's a breaker car so I'll cut through the transmission tunnel.
Legend has it that an array of universal joints, 3/8" drive sockets and extensions from under the car, up the side of the transmission to almost the top of the transmission will make the bolt submit. I tried that, but it didn't work for me.
I feel for you buddy so I'd advise you make sure it's the starter that is definately the problem.'

It can only be harder on an xjr6.
Advice is to make sure it's the starter motor that is the problem.

Thanks again I recall your first reply but I was hoping to get input from others. You can buy replacements so someone must know exactly how and what tools are required to get this thing off without pulling the engine.. lol

Its a royal pita easier if you have a lift remove oil filter and use extension, when i put it back in i used a long strong magnet on the bolt head and turne it few turns then used the wrenh to tighten (its basically almost in a blind situation)

I can't really help. I replaced my starter while I had the intake manifold off so, naturally, it took only a few minutes.

However......I may have a way to make the pain worthwhile.

* IF * your lower radiator hose has never been changed you may be on borrowed time. If it fails it's not the time of thing you could ever deal with by the side of the road. So, you might wanna consider replacing the lower hose ....which means removing the intake manifold....which would make the starter very easy to change.

Just a crazy thought :-)

Cheers

Lummpy and Doug, is this the top bolt you are referring to? I've tried to remove mine with hardly anything in the engine bay. I reckon if I fabricated a spanner it might work. The bulkhead and brake pipes get in the way of suing conventional tools and so do the strengthening veins of the bellhousing. Granted its a 3.2 so I don't know if the bellhousing is different to the xjr. I wonder if dropping the back of the transmission would give that extra couple of mm/cm to allow access from beneath?
I've tried from beneath but the UV joints of any combination of extensions for 3/8" drive just make the socket twist off the bolt.
I too am all ears on this one.

Thank you all for your great input. I'm new to this inline 6 engine so needed the input. How hard is it to get the intake off?

Thanks
