Exclamation Strange goings on 1996 xj6

I have a strange thing happening with my instruments. Intermittently ALL the warning lights will come on, the gauges, speed, tach, fuel, temp, etc. will drop to zero, and odometer display reads airbag. There isn't any performance change, car still continues driving fine with the exception of the cruise control; it turns off. My first thought was the body processor, but I'm not sure as other elec systems work okay i.e. radio, heat/AC control. My problem is I'm miles away from a Jag mechanic so I have to try and sort this out myself. Any ideas out there Jag folks?

Hi Harold,

A quick search of the forum turns up these threads which may be applicable to your problem. Suspect one or more bad ignition coils:

There may also be a TSB on this topic, but I'm not certain if it applies to the X300. You might check the TSBs here and at jagrepair.com.

Cheers,

Don

I'd back up Don here. I had identical symptoms - although with a pronounced misfire - and it was a bad coil. If you have not checked it out already, I recommend taking a look at the lengthy coil discussion in the main X300 section.

Default Strange things going on "REMedy"

If you recall, I was dealing with an erratic instrument panel. 90% of the responses suggested that the problem was likely a bad coil, well in that I had installed new coils just a couple of months prior, and the car was running fine; and my diagnostic computer gave no error codes I didn't think that was the problem in my case. But low and behold within the week that car started missing, so with a quick dianostic check, you guessed it, A BAD COIL. Replace thhe coil, everything back to normal. The moral of the story; not all new parts are good parts

Yep, and only one "new" manufacturer of coils seems to make any that last, all other aftermarket coils seem to give up quickly after purchase. More info here:
