Stuck in valet mode, maybe?

Stuck in valet mode, maybe?
I've been trying to get the central door lock system to work on a 96 xj6 in the USA. The car starts and runs fine, but the door locks only lock with the key or pushing down the lock on the doors. Is it possible the car is stuck in valet mode? The boot(trunk) will only open the key. I've tried a hard reset by touching the battery cables together(after removing the ground from the battery, of course), and that hasn't helped.

Unlikely the valet function, as it resets when a normal (not green headed) key is used to start the car.
Do you have remote fobs that aren’t working? These can be reprogrammed in the car (oddly enough with the valet switch) if the battery is good. Look in the FAQ in the sticky’s.
The boot button often doesn’t work because of broken wires around the right hand boot hinge.
Good luck,
Peter

The way to take the car out of VALET MODE is to open the boot and have the car recognize that fact (Lights in boot activated).
Any key in the ignition will have no effect on the VALET function. (North American cars do not have RFID keys)
When the boot lid is opened, are the lights ON??
Cafcpete is correct about the wiring to be the likely cause.
Could also be a SLCM fault.

I just checked. Yes, the light comes on in the boot. The FOB's do not operate anything. I have new batteries in them and the green and red lights on them flash when the buttons are pushed. I have tried the reprogramming sequence several times with no success. I have checked every fuse, and they are all good. I have checked the connections above the fuel tank and at the SLCM. The odd thing about this car is that early on it would not start after recharging the battery. Then one day I walked up to it and the red light was flashing on the central lock button. The car started up fine and the FOB's even worked. I was about to call the owner to tell her that everything was fine, but I decided to try it one more time. The car still started and ran fine, but the FOB's stopped working and the auto door locks. I'm stumped. I am not charging the owner. She is a good friend.
Thanks for the tip on the broken wires. I will check that.
