Default Transmission Filter

I bought atp filter kit from Rockauto and the filter does not have a pickup tube like the one I removed, but slot in the side of the housing for oil entrance. Coventry West, on the other hand, shows a tube on their filter.
Should I toss the atp unit and order from Coventry West?

Assuming you have an N/A straight-six, you probably picked up the filter for the 4HP22 fitted to the 3.2 litre, while you want one for a 4HP24-E as fitted to the 4.0.

I made the same mistake, the other way around. Fortunately, my brother was able to use it on his Range Rover.

I suppose that's possible, but Rockauto doesn't even list the 3.2 as an option. I didn't think they were sold in the US.

Sounds like you got the one for the 88-89 cars with the shallow sump. Definitely need that tube as the sump is deeper on the later sedans up to 97.

I suspected that was the case. I have ordered the correct part from Coventry West (I hope) and will just have to drive the XK8 until it arrives. At least it's not raining here, but it's far too cold to put the top down.

I think the 4HP22 and 4HP24 are mostly the same except for the deeper sump and larger torque converter and stronger internals.

An '88/'89 XJ40 would be a 3.6 wouldn't it? They have the 4HP22 as well.

It'll work, use it and don't worry about it.

The XJ-S 4.0 uses the 4HP24 without the extended tube but the 4.0 sedan has the deeper pan as stated by others.

I suppose the filter can be used if the level does not get too low. Air will be 'sucked' if the fluid fails to cover the filter.

Use the right filter.

Using the filter for the shallower pan would negate the effect of having the deeper pan, and possibly make it even worse as cornering displaces the fluid even further.

In this case, don't worry be happy is not really a good path to follow.

Yes, cornering was my concern. The correct filter is arriving today and I have advised Rockauto of the problem.
Owners of X300 series should note that rockauto.com does not stock the correct transmission filter.

I think one of the mods could mark this thread RESOLVED.
Thanks all for your assistance.

Default Will I have same issue?

I ordered a Fram FT1076 for my North American 1997 XJ6 from RockAuto.
FRAM's website says this is what I should use.
Part Details
I have yet to remove the old filter and compare. Will I have the same issue?
Knowing now will save me downtime on the car!

Thank you very much.

That looks like the one I threw away. This one from motorcars has the pickup.

I come across errors in these on-line listings/catalogs quite often, especially for makes/models that are a bit off the beaten path....like Jaguar. Usually a couple of minutes Googling the part number will reveal discrepancies before you hit the "add to cart" button.

Sometimes it pays to do business over the phone with a real living person who specializes in Jags and already has figured out these details.

Just my crummy two cents :-)

Cheers

Jaguar Classic Parts is usually my first stop to get the part number. Often I've seen parts vary by VIN and not just make / model / year.

In this case the diagram isn't very good, but the listing shows you want a JLM2128 not a JLM664.

Genuine Jaguar Parts and Jaguar Accessories for Classic Jaguars

Googling those part numbers will highlight the differences between them.

Excelent point! A recent situation I faced; I have to change output shaft bearings in my car ('95 MY built 10/94). I called my parts man, Pete Bond at Coventry West, and asked for two "kits". "Ohhh, you have one of those mongrel cars. There isn't a kit for your car. I'm going to have to look your parts up because they're mix and match". It's worth paying extra for the knowledge and service. Just my $.02...

That is timely information. I have a leaky seal on my '95 and will replace it next month. I haven't checked the build date yet, but I'll do that before I call them.
