Default A trivial question

I feel ashamed to ask but I need to move the coolant expansion tank on my 3.2 X300 out of the way while I undo the top shock bolt. I know there is only one 10mm bolt but I can't find the bloody thing.

Be gentle.

Mike

Under the trim panel. Pull the wing weatherstrip, lift off the plastic trim piece and you should see it.

And that nut at the top of the shock really is an inconvenient 16mm? I was hoping to use a deep 5/8 socket but it doesn't seem to fit.

5/8 will work with the 16mm. Although you'll most likely have to hold the counterhold on top of the threads to keep the shock from spinning.

If you have an air wrench you can probably spin the nut up if you use a high torque setting in short bursts to reduce how much the shaft spins, which can damage the piston seals. The fastest safer method I've found is to use a ratcheting box-end wrench/ring spanner on the nut and hold the flats on the shaft with Vise Grips/Mole Grips or an adjustable wrench/spanner.

If you haven't invested in a set of ratcheting wrenches, you'll wonder how you ever got along without them. GearWrench makes nice ones that are affordable (and they also are the maker of the Sears Craftsman versions).

Cheers,

Don

I admit I was hoping an air gun would start the process. Maybe I'll take your advice and try two spanners first.
