Default Upper tensioner and service

While since I have been here. The XJ6 continues to be my daily driver and all in all proving to be a reliable old car. Its coming up to about 2 years since I bought it. It was an extremely cheap car but I have spent money getting it right gradually. Since I bought it I have done both belts, replaced door car clips, front and rear discs and pads, rear shocks, rear springs, fuel rail, rear wheel bearings and replaced steering wheel, 4 new tyres and thermostat/temp sender - think thats it! When I first bought the car I did an oil and filter change and with nearly 12,000 miles and 24 months I decided it was time for a service.

I used 5W40 oil - 8 litres. Genuine Jaguar oil and air filter. Service pretty straight forward. Not sure why Jaguar chose a 30mm nut for sump but anyway ....

Only comments here were that I found it easier to remove the MAF and ducting right up to the throttle body and get the filter off from above rather than reach up from below.

Also did the chain tensioner - straight forward job but make sure you order bolts and the gasket as the tensioner I bought didn't come with these and if the car is still on the original one there are two different length bolts. I decided to take the cam cover off to ensure I could put pressure on the inner side of the chain to gentle push the piston out with the tensioner casing. Before I started I pulled fuel pump relay and let the car die. Turned over a few times to ensure no fuel. I found the cam cover gasket very frustrating - doesn't stay in the grooves and is slightly too big so it keeps popping out as you go around pushing it in. Replaced spark plug hole gaskets as well and the screw hole rubber inserts. Took 5 attempts to get it on with the gasket falling out but persevere and its okay. After fitting turned car over for about a minute before refitting pump relay. All good!

Jobs to do now - fit front wheel bearings that I have had for about 4 months .... and also tomorrow the fuel filter that came with the service kit I bought.

Big jobs pending - fulcrum bearings and replace all cooling pipes as they look a little old to say the least!!! I'll no doubt do water pump as the same time.

Don't forget that greasing the Driveshaft UJs is a service item. Often neglected.
