Well I’ve had the XJ on marketplace for a while. Also stuck it on Facebook. Sue me. I’ve got what I think is a fair price but holy molie. I thought the car would become desirable. If you look for just the engine/ECU, it’s a significant portion of what I want for the car! What’s the deal?
well Doug, nice to hear from you. Didn’t realize you were an owner or didn’t remember don’t know which. of course it doesn’t help that I’ve put more money into the car than I can possibly sell it for and recoup anything. In between the time I bought it and now life has caught up to me at 70. And then the larger picture seems to be that there is a shrinking population of people who are actually interested in any kind of car that needs more than a full tank of gas occasionally and a trip to Jiffy Lube. I just have to remind myself that I’ve owned many nice cars, restored a few of them and I’ll just have to bite the bullet and let this one go.
Yeah, I bought mine circa 2006 and sold it circa 2016.
It was a real creampuff when I bought it; only about 29k miles as I recall. I do recall that I paid the princely sum of....oh my god..... $10,000 for it.
I should've sold it a couple years sooner. I remember now that, besides the 171k miles, the paint was definitely showing its age.
Anyhow, some cars "catch on" ..... and others don't. Sometimes illogically, IMO :-)
Price is always a moving subjective target. I would go on EBay and do some searches for completed auctions for your car. I did but none are listed?
You did not mention the mileage but as Doug pointed out his car had a lot of miles-171K.
I do see some sold on Bring A Trailer but the ones that have some value are all low mileage cars with 30K-50K miles on them.
Here are the few that have sold on BAT in the last 6-7 years. Note only 14 have been listed since 2019.
This chart was for 1995-1997 XJR's.

Yeah, these XJR6s just fly under the radar compared to the V8 ones. I might be getting mine written up by some auto journalists in the spring, so with luck that can get some publicity and pump up the values. Until then, it'll just be our well-kept secret.
Hi there all and to Doug who has helped me over the years. thank you! Thought I'd chime in on the old XJR6 value conversation! I bought an incredible condition XJ6 during covid. I loved that car white on coffee leather. BUT.... I always wanted the XJR6....
So sold the XJ6 and waited about 5 months. I bought a 1995 turquoise color XJR6. The car looks stunning. But.... It's been repainted. It has the 1700 RPM timing chain rattle and the oil guage was showing 0 psi when hot after driving for a while. it has 112k on it. I run 10w-60 oil in it and oil pressure guage never goes to zero anymore even after some good hard driving. I'm going to try 10w-50 oil I think next time. But it's only marketed as motorcycle oil as far as I can tell. I think I'd be OK? Doug?
I paid 8k for it last May. I then paid 1500 to ship and 300 for a winshield motor. I inspected upper timing tensioner myself and its the newer one with arrow and it wasn't scored.
I probably paid 2 grand too much but I dont know. The car just looks lovely! One has to look to see that it's a repaint such as lifting the windshield rubber a bit. And there are maybe 2 2x2inch clear coat peel spots. so it's not bad at all. It's just my white XJ6 was PERFECT! but my XJR is well...... its an XJR.
The guy I got it from was fine no complaints but I'm not sure how one could miss that timing chain rattle. I'm just going to keep it and have no idea what in 4 years the car would even be worth. I only have myself to blame though as I stupidly bought both cars sight unseen. Some guys go to casino.... I bought 2 kitties without driving them first.
I got hurt somewhat I think. But I've also driven the car... not top speed of course but I've had it wound to 4 and 5k RPMs. I've come to accept what some fellows have told me. Just drive it some of these x300 have HAUNTED engines. It's not a toyota and it can make wierd noises. But I've NEVER heard of anyone snapping a x300 I6 chain and I ask every mechanic and parts house that I talk with about it.
So for now, all good. I hope....
Anyhow thats my 5 cents on XJR6 values and experience thus far. Cant wait to look at it again and drive it on a nice road. I'm in Boston so not nice roads and snow right now. so she's been sleeping for 3 weeks on battery tender.
